Let’s talk about where to stay in Barcelona. We lived in nearby Valencia for two years and explored teh neighborhoods of Barcelona to the north as often as we could. It’s an incredible city. There is so much to see and do all year round, from architectural masterpieces like the Sagrada Familia and the home stadium of FC Barcelona, this city will dazzle you. Many travelers visit Barcelona with kids in the summertime, but I can tell you from experience that winter in Barcelona is lots of fun, too. But before you arrive, here’s a little info on the best neighborhoods of Barcelona and the best Barcelona hotels that operate there.

Our Favorite Barcelona Neighborhoods

La Boqueria Barcelona market tours - Neighborhoods in barcelona

Barcelona is divided into multiple districts, each having subsections as well. Below are some of our favorite neighborhoods in Barcelona to explore. Most of the Barcelona hotels that we recommend are in or near these areas.

Gracia:

Presently one of the hippest Barcelona neighborhoods, Gracia has lots of parks, cafes, and bars/live houses. It also has lots of playgrounds if you’re in Barcelona with kids. This Barcelona neighborhood spans the higher ground northwest from Eixample and Sagrada Familia. Parc Guel is in its northern corner.

  • Where to Stay in Barcelona for village vibe, traditional neighborhood, Catalan food, up-and-coming indie shop scene.

Eixample:

Eixample is the Barcelona neighborhood for shopping and art deco. Many of Gaudi’s most famous works are in this area of the city, including Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and the Sagrada Familia. Eixample also connects some of the coolest Barcelona neighborhoods. You have Gracia Barrio to the north and Gothic Quarter to the south

  • Where to Stay in Barcelona for the food scene, architecture, and a  downtown feel.

Ciutat Vella:

Possibly the most popular area in the city with the most Barcelona hotels per square kilometer. Ciutat Vella is where you’ll find the Gothic Quarter and the famous promenade known as La Rambla.

  • Where to Stay in Barcelona for Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter, nightlife, and crowds.

The Gothic Quarter:

One of the oldest neighborhoods in Barcelona, the Gothic Quarter is all ancient buildings and winding alleyways. There are also loads of great restaurants and cool boutiques in the area too. The downside: it’s quite crowded. Even so, wander long enough from the main arteries and you’ll find some charming back streets.

  • Where to Stay in Barcelona for history, cobblestone streets, cool shops (and cheesy souvenir shops, too), ancient buildings, and atmosphere to spare.

La Rambla:

Not exactly a neighborhood in Barcelona, this is still one of its most famous places. This long promenade goes from the Plaza Catalunya all the way to the sea. All available space between is filled with shops, restaurants, and buskers. As with hotels in the Gothic Quarter, this is close to the action but can be loud and crowded.

  • Where to Stay in Barcelona for La Boqueria Market, nightlife & restaurants, buskers & performance artists, and mobs of people.

Poblenou:

In Poble Nou, you get the best of several Barcelona neighborhoods. To the southeast, you have beaches and a more traditional vibe. Go further inland and you find cool coffee shops and a more indie/hipster environment.

  • Where to Stay in Barcelona for design, hip shops & cafes, the beach.

San Marti:

If you’re here for the beach, this is one of the Barcelona neighborhoods to look into. Many of the best Barcelona hotels near the beach are located here, and it’s a very lively area in the summertime. There are also some great running tracks and shopping centers to keep you on your feet.

  • Where to Stay in Barcelona for the beach, shopping, and jogging.

Sants-Montjuïc:

This western Barcelona neighborhood has great views of the city as it goes up the hillside to the Palau Nacional and Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. This area of Barcelona is also where you’ll find the MNAC Museum and Poble Espanyol.

  • Where to Stay in Barcelona for museums, the Magic Fountain, views of the city below and a mellower residential feel.

Best Barcelona Hotels in Gracia Barrio

BestGracia Barrio - Neighborhoods in barcelona hotels

If you want both nightlife and a quiet local vibe, then this is where to stay in Barcelona. The Gracia Barrio feels almost like a different town altogether. Yet it’s close enough to the Barcelona attractions, including many of Antonio Gaudi’s most famous works.

Hotel Casa Fuster G L Monumento

Want to sleep in a UNESCO Heritage Site? Then this is where to stay in Barcelona. Situated at the top of the stylish Passeig de Gracia Avenue, the Hotel Casa Fuster G L Monumento is an amazing monument to modernism itself. The hallways and some rooms may not be as bright as they could be, but the design and history will make it up for many of you. The Gracia neighborhood of Barcelona is great as well, and you’re close to many of Gaudi’s most famous works in town.

Pol & Grace

Located around the corner from the Placa Molina Metro Station, you can walk to the Placa de Catalunya and La Rambla neighborhood in 15 minutes. Parc Guell isn’t far away, either. The staff at Pol & Grace get lots of praise online, as does the breakfast and size of the rooms. These are things that make it one of the best hotels in Barcelona. Close to a smaller, local “La Rambla” type strip, too, with restaurants and buskers that everyone can enjoy.

Ohla Eixample

One of the most popular boutique hotels in Barcelona. Visiting the city to see the work of Antoni Gaudi? Then this is where to stay in Barcelona: only 10 minutes from La Pedrera, Casa Mila, and Casa Batlló. The Sagrada Familia is a short walk from there. The pool is heated year-round which is great if you decide to visit Barcelona in winter. There are double rooms and connecting rooms that can accommodate groups. Some people consider the doors to be too heavy for young kids to operate on their own. Keep that in mind, but it is still considered one of the best family hotels in Barcelona.

Want to sleep in a 19th-century palace? Then this is where to stay in Barcelona. Located in the center of the city, Vincci Gala is an ancient building with modern interiors and amenities. It’s one of the most well-located hotels in Barcelona. Located next to a metro station, Vincci Gala is a two-minutes walk from Plaça Catalunya Square and hundreds of restaurants, shops, and cafes. Because of this, consider the upper floors if you’re a light sleeper. In addition to other sleeping options, two connecting double rooms are available.

The Eixample area is one of the most popular areas of the city. Some of the best Barcelona hotels (including family hotels in Barcelona) are located in Eixample.

U232

Considered one of the best luxury hotels in Barcelona, the U232 accommodates families and large groups. Family rooms have 2 TVs and 2 full baths, but the doors make a bit of noise. The location is very close to Barcelona’s main shopping street (Diagonal Ave.). And it’s only a short trip to places like Camp Nou, the Magic Fountain, and the Sagrada Familia. All this, and in a quiet neighborhood, too.

Onix Rambla

One of the best family hotels in Barcelona for those who want to be close but not spend too much. It’s also where to stay in Barcelona for backpackers, as well. Las Ramblas Hotels

La Boqueria - where to stay in barcelona hotels on las ramblas

Packed with restaurants, shops, and people, Las Ramblas is always action-packed. Hotels near Las Ramblas cater to travelers and tourists alike. Just remember that this is generally a noisy area.

Hotel Continental Palacete

Looking for boutique hotels in Barcelona? Check out this renovated 19th-century palace. This is where to stay in Barcelona for location, family suites, and a 24-hour food buffet. Located right on La Rambla and only five minutes from Plaza de Catalunya, the Continental Palacete puts you in the center of the action. Their family rooms accommodate a family of five, but the one near the front desk is a little noisy.

Cuatro Naciones

A lovely and reasonably priced hotel on Las Ramblas, especially when you consider the location next to the Gothic Quarter. The building has served as a hotel for nearly 200 years. This adds charm and atmosphere but also means decorations are a bit dated. Also, street noise is audible, so light sleepers beware.

Best Hotels in the Gothic Quarter

hotels in gothic quarter best neighborhoods in barcelona

This is my favorite neighborhood in Barcelona. Yes, it’s a bit crowded in the high season but the atmosphere is hard to beat. This is the “old city,” but it’s bursting with new energy.

Hotel Barcelona Catedral

Hotel Barcelona Catedral is where to stay in Barcelona for people watching. It’s a hundred meters from the Barcelona Cathedral where it gets its name. Placa de Catalunya is less than a 10-minute walk away. Free walking tours of the historic district happen twice a week. If all that walking gets you hungry, the restaurants and tapas scene of Las Ramblas and the Born district are five minutes away.

Petit Palace Boqueria Garden

One of the best hotels in the Gothic Quarter and quite possibly the best location for people who want to be in the center of the action. Not only is the hotel close to Las Ramblas, but it’s seconds away from the famous Boqueria Market as well. Pick something up at the market and enjoy it in the courtyard of the hotel. Or book one of their apartment rentals and you have a kitchen at your disposal. You get a wide variety of sleeping arrangements here: from single bedrooms to apartments that sleep six.

Ciutat de Barcelona

Located a few steps from the Picasso Museum, the Ciutat de Barcelona is one of the best hotels in the Barcelona with a rooftop pool. Rooms are small and spare but the area is great for restaurants and art. In truth this is actually in the El Born neighborhood of Barcelona. I’ve listed it as one of the best hotels in the Gothic Quarter since you’re only a few minutes on foot from the center of Barcelona’s oldest, hippest scene.

Great apartment rentals near the Sagrada Familia. Comes with a washing machine, microwave, and refrigerator. An additional portable heater is available in the winter. Barcelona Hotels in Poblenou

Old and new collide in this Barcelona neighborhood. Stay here if you want the beach and the bistros.

The Level Poblenou

One of the best luxury hotels in Barcelona. They have excellent pools but one is closed until May 2020. Then again, the beach is only 15 min away. There are also restaurants in the hotel, and they can cater to gluten and lactose-intolerant diets. The Metro Poblenou Station is a few minutes on foot, and the center of town is only a few stations. All marks of the best family hotels in Barcelona. They also have a very convenient bag drop-off policy. This lets you explore the city just a bit longer without dragging your suitcase around. Barcelona Princess

AC Hotel Barcelona Forum

Where to stay in Barcelona to be close to the beach. Downtown Barcelona is 15 minutes away. Many of the best hotels in Barcelona are in this area, and this is one of them. Compared with other Barcelona hotels, Marriot’s family rooms are a little bigger. There are some connecting rooms available, as well. Wifi is free, but high-speed comes with a fee. That may be because this caters more to business travelers than to Barcelona family travelers. Don’t let the “business hotel” veneer lose you. The Marriott is a great family hotel in Barcelona, and its location on the beach earns it an extra point from little swimmers. Definitely where to stay in Barcelona during summertime.

Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona

Another great Barcelona hotel near the beach. Minutes from the sand, this luxury hotel in Barcelona has the city on one side and the beach on the other. The pool is open from May to October, but Nova Mar Bella Beach is 400 meters away. Two minutes out the front door is El Maresme-Forum Metro Station, which can whisk you into central Barcelona in less than 20 minutes. Markets are right outside. The Hop-on, hop-off bus stops right next to the hotel. Out of all the family hotels in Barcelona, this is one of the best connected in the Diagonal district.

Seven minutes from the metro and ten minutes from the sand, Vincci Bit is an excellent Barcelona hotel near the beach. Some consider it one of the best boutique hotels in Barcelona thanks to the hip, graffiti-like interior design. The Diagonal Mar shopping and entertainment center are a short walk away. The pool has a great view of the city. The streets are quieter at night and the nearby beaches tend to be less crowded in the warmer months.
