Best Family Hotels in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is one of our favorite cities in Thailand. There’s great food, nice people and a more laid-back atmosphere than Bangkok (aka BKK). Chiang Mai is much more affordable than the capital, as well, and easy to reach — especially if you’re flying. Moreover, there are lots of great learning opportunities for curious and adventurous families.

In this post, you’ll find our list of the best Chiang Mai hotels for families, as well as further reading on how to get the most out of Chiang Mai with children.

Chiang Mai Travel Tips

Best Hotels in Chiang Mai — Our Top Chiang Mai Hotels for Families 2

Chiang Mai “Old Town” is a small square of land surrounded by a wall and a moat. You’ll often hear people talk about locations “in the walled city” or “in the old town” or out. Anything within the old city is fairly walkable, although sidewalk usage is erratic.

The area east of the walled city (up to the Ping River) has lots of accommodation and activities as well. Not everything is happening in the old city.

We also like the Nimmanahaem neighborhood northwest of the walled city. Lots of great food and coffee shops, as well as the Maya Mall, which has great movie theaters.

The best time to visit Chiang Mai with kids is between October (end of rainy season) and early February (beginning of burning season).

Avoid Chiang Mai during the burning season. Between late February and mid-April, local farmers burn off old crops and the air is hazy and terrible. It’s similar to what happens in Penang and elsewhere because of the forest fires in Indonesia.

There are ethical ways to interact with elephants and hill tribes. Do your research before signing up for just any tour.

More Chiang Mai Tips

No matter whether you’re in the best family hotels in Chiang Mai or a two-star guest house, here are a few things to consider:

  • Beds tend to run hard in Thailand — even in the best resorts in Chiang Mai. Some of the nicer places may have optional additional padding, but in general expect a firm mattress.
  • Shockingly, many of the best hotels in Chiang Mai have unreliable wifi. This is shocking simply because wifi in Chiang Mai coffeeshops is some of the best in all of Southeast Asia. If your hotel has bad wifi, walk over to one of Chiang Mai’s 100’s of high-speed wifi cafes to knock out some work.
  • Many of the best family hotels in Chiang Mai have pools, but you might not use it as much as you think you will. This is northern Thailand, and it’s cooler and drier here than on places like Phuket and Krabi. And if pools are in the shade a lot, they stay cooler than some kids (and parents) might like.
  • Thai food tends to run spicier than much of the local food in Southeast Asia. And a lot of it is cooked-in and not served as a condiment on the side, like in Vietnam.
