Bali scooters. Best Hotels in Bali for Families & Everyone Else — Bali Travel

Before you visit Bali, there are a few travel tips we’d like to share. Any Bali holiday will be improved by reading through these Bali travel tips. Did we miss anything?

Where to Stay in Bali for Everyone

Some people take a Bali holiday with one thing in mind. Whether it’s surfing or shopping, some traveler choose their Bali hotels and resorts by their proximity to what they love to do. Here are a few tips for those will a Bali holiday agenda.

Where to Stay in Bali for Beaches

You’re spoiled for choice on this one. If you love active beaches with surfing and watersports, look for hotels in Seminyak or Kuta. If you want it quiet and pristine, consider Nusa Dua resorts. Prefer is slow-paced and mellow? Then seek out the best resorts and hotels in Sanur, or perhaps the black sand beaches of Lovina. This is an island surrounded by beaches, and these are just a few.

Where to Stay in Bali for Culinary Travelers

The strip that includes Kuta, Legian and Seminyak have loads of dining opportunities. A little further north are the famous beachside restaurants of Jimbaran. For us, however, Ubud is where to stay in Bali for culinary experiences. There are cooking classes, market tours and just about every type of restaurant under the sun.

Where to Stay in Bali for Shopping & Nightlife

Most people consider Kuta and Seminyak where to stay in Bali for shopping and nightlife, but Jimbaran and Canggu have their own thing going, as well. If you’re looking to buy traditional crafts, then consider Ubud where to stay in Bali. Here you’ll find everything from woodcarving and ceramics to silver jewelry and paintings.

Where to Stay in Bali for Diving

For the best diving in Bali head northeast to Amed. This is where to stay in Bali for the best snorkeling and scuba diving, and also puts you close to Lombok and the Gili Islands which are also great for diving. In fact, my kids got their PADI certification on Gili Air

Where to Stay in Bali for Surfing

You can find good waves along the Kuta strip, as well as further north at Canggu. But many people consider the southernmost peninsula to be where to stay in Bali for surfing. The resorts in Nusa Dua or hotels and guesthouses near Suluban surf beach on the west coast are where to look.

Where to Stay in Bali for Culture & Classes

You can experience the “real Bali” in places like Sanur, Lovina and many of the other best places in Bali. However, we think that Ubud is where to stay in Bali to learn the most about Balinese culture. Traditions are still alive here. And although they are being commercialized more than in years past, there are loads of opportunities to experience them first hand.

Best Hotels in Bali: By Region

best hotels in bali collage

kids at temple best hotels in bali for families

Our list of the best hotels in Bali is categorized by region: best hotels in Ubud, best hotels in Seminyak, Kuta & Legian, best hotels in Sanur, and best hotels in Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and the Bukit Peninsula. Each area of Bali has a unique feel, and I’ll describe it as we go. Shall we get started?

Below I run through some of the most popular places to stay in Bali and what they are best known for. Of course, these are generalizations. For example, if I say that Nusa Dua is where to stay in Bali for a romantic honeymoon, that doesn’t mean yo can’t find that in the best resorts in Ubud, Sanur or elsewhere. Same goes for family travelers, solo travelers, digital nomads and other people looking to book a Bali holiday.

Nusa Dua

Where to Stay in Bali for resorts, romance and family packages. Located south of the airport, the Nusa Dua hotels and resorts area is designed for luxury travelers. It’s quiet, clean, and has some of the best beaches in Bali. However, it feels somewhat removed from the rest of the island and the culture. Some of the best Nusa Dua resorts have great packages for newlyweds, while others have exceptional family facilities and kids clubs.

Jimbaran

Once a small fishing village, Jimbaran is now where to go in Bali for shopping and seafood. The most famous place in Jimbaran is the stretch of beach lined with restaurants where you admire the sunset, toes in the sand, dining of fresh seafood barbecue.

Kuta/Legian/Seminyak

These three areas are often divided in description but it’s all the same strip on the southwest coast. Things get swankier as venture north. Calmer at night too (Kuta is the most chaotic). This area is where to stay in Bali if you want to be close to infinite shopping and dining options. Waterbom, Bali’s amazing waterpark, is also located here, so some people stay the night in the area to make the most of their day there. Also where to stay in Bali for surfing and beach holidays.

Canggu

Where to stay in Bali for digital nomads and the cool cats. Further north from posh Seminyak you’ll find Canggu, an area known by millennials for its wifi cafes and startup scene. It has all the best of Bali as well: from nice beaches to rice terraces in the interior.

Ubud

Our favorite place to stay in Bali and where to stay in Bali for culture, crafts and classes. Resorts and dining, too. This is where many old Balinese traditions continue to thrive: from traditional dance to artisanal goods. Ubud resorts and hotels are far from the beach, but tucked into the most pristine corners of the jungle, between rice fields or both. The dining scene here is incredible, as well.

Sanur

Where to stay in Bali for a relaxed day at the beach. The best Sanur hotels and resorts are favorite with families because of the sleepy nature of the town and the clear, shallow waters that are never far away. Couples enjoy Sanur resorts as well when they want to be away from the bustle of Kuta but only a short ride from it. Ubud isn’t far, either.

Other Places to Stay in Bali

I’ve listed up some of the most popular places to stay in Bali, but they’re not the only Bali accommodation we recommend. For black sand beaches and an even slower pace, head to Lovina. Want diving and easy access to Lombok and the Gili Islands? Ahmed is where to stay in Bali. These are just a few more of the best places to stay in Bali.

Best Hotels in Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa & Bukit Peninsula

Calling all beach resort lovers. Many of the best resorts in Bali are in Nusa Dua and the area surrounding it. The best resorts in Nusa Dua have pristine white sand and impeccable rooms, but they could be any hotel in any part of the world.

The infrastructure of Nusa Dua and the Bukit Peninsula were designed for tourism and to be the best hotels in Bali. If you want a beach escape, then this may be the place for you. However, if you want to experience some Balinese culture, either split your trip into more than one location or plan some day trips away from Nusa Dua.

The Laguna Resort & Spa

Watersport equipment like sea kayaks and paddle boards are provided free, as well.

Rooms are large, lavish and stylish. Many even come with a telescope to observe the stars at night. One drawback is that while the beach is close, it’s also down a number of steps, which may be trouble for families carrying babies or other travelers with mobility issues.

The Inaya Putri is one one of the best hotels in Nusa Dua for those ready to spend their days in the sun. The grounds are large and well-landscaped, but there’s little shade at the pool or on the sand nearby. That said, the rooms are stylish, secluded by greenery and many have direct pool access. There are an indoor play area and a kids club, and you’re a 5-minute ride from shopping at Bali Collection.

Courtyard by Marriott Bali Nusa Dua

For 5-star luxury, it’s hard to go wrong with the Marriot, one of the best hotels in Bali. Rooms are spacious and stylish if a little sterile. Large bathrooms have marble floors (be careful with little kids slipping). There are multiple pools (river style, kids pool, an adult-only pool, etc) and a good indoor play area. Babysitting services can hold the little ones for a few hours while you go for spa treatments. Their private beach is a 5-minute ride away, with regular shuttles and a restaurant/rest area on the sand.

Holiday Inn Resort Bali Benoa

One of the most family-friendly hotels in Nusa Dua. Great kids pool area and kids club. Some kids eat free here, as well. Family rooms come with an Xbox in the kids’ room. The hotel is right next to the beach and you can walk down to the sand to try out any number of restaurants. The action in Kuta isn’t far away, either: a taxi can get you to Waterbom in about 20 minutes.

Best Hotels in Jimbaran

best hotels in jimabaran bali resorts hotels in bali

The first time we went to Jimbaran beach in 2011 we had an amazing meal on a dirty beach. A lot has changed (for the better) in Jimbaran. What was once a sleepy fishing village is now swanky resorts, hip restaurants and beautiful beaches. Sure the seafood BBQ is still good, but not the rest of the area is catching up to the dining scene.

AYANA Resort and Spa

This 5-star luxury resort in Jimbaran sits atop a cliff overlooking white sand beaches and azure blue seas. With twelve pools and even more dining opportunities, the Ayana is one of the best luxury resorts in Bali, and only a short drive to/from the airport. Known for its Rock Bar as a sunset spot, just about every inch of this place is stunning.

InterContinental Bali Resort

More of the best luxury resorts in Bali. The InterContinental is an exceptional place to stay in Jimbaran. The beach is beautiful and has great surfing opportunities. The dining is great on-site, but perhaps a little overpriced, but it’s right next to the famous Jimbaran seafood restaurants. There’s an on-site doctor and great kids club with activities rotating regularly.

Watermark Bali Hotel & Spa

Rooms at this Jimbaran hotel are large, clean, and modern. The breakfast buffet is varied and generous. Rooms at the front get some traffic noise, so book the pool or garden view. Two pools: one large ground-level pool for more active fun, with a rooftop pool for drinks and the sunset.

Best Hotels in Kuta & Legian

best hotels in kuta resorts hotels in bali

One of the busiest areas in Bali are the three beach towns of Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak. In general, Kuta is the most crowded and frenetic of the three, and it gets quieter and more sophisticated (and expensive) as you move north into hotels in Legian and resorts in Seminyak. That said, there are pockets of budget hotels and mammoth luxury resorts in each area.

Some of the best hotels in Bali can be found in each of these areas. Whether you want to base yourself here depends on if you want to be in the thick of the action or far from it. Kuta is the most chaotic, and the touts here tend to be more assertive than elsewhere. Then again, Waterbom, our family’s favorite waterpark in the world, is in Kuta, which always draws us back for at least a day or two.

Hard Rock Hotel Bali

When it comes to the best resorts in Bali, it’s hard to go wrong with the Hard Rock. Just like the Hard Rock Hotel in Penang, the Hard Rock Kuta has some of the best pools in Bali — it even includes a rock-climbing wall. If you want the beach, it’s right there, as well.

All of the extras that come with the Hard Rock experience make it one of the best family hotels in Bali. The rooms come with speakers and loads of movies. The on-site recording studio lets your kids experience what it’s like to cut a track. The kids and teen clubs are some of the highest-rated, and the hotel, pool and restaurant staff are as welcoming and professional as they come.

  • Pool: Yes (Huge and water play areas)
  • Wifi: Yes
  • Location: Seconds from the beach, minutes from shopping and waterpark
  • Other info: Kids pool sometimes closes at 6 pm (too early)

Alam Kulkul Boutique Resort

This is one of the best hotels in Legian for families who want traditional touches with modern amenities. The Alam Kulkul Boutique Resort is minutes from the beach, from great restaurants an from shopping areas like Garlic Lane.

The hotel is set back from the road, keeping it close to the action without hearing the noise at night. Rooms are spacious and quiet. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and green. Villas have private pools and lots of light. The location and beautiful grounds make this one of the best hotels in Bali for families.

  • Pool: 2
  • Wifi: Yes
  • Location: Minutes from the beach, from dining. Also close to shopping spots like Beachwalk Shopping Centre, Garlic Lane & Poppies Lane.

Bali Dynasty Resort

If you have kids who love waterslides, then Bali Dynasty Resort is one of the best hotels Kuta for you. Bali Dynasty is minutes away from Waterbom, one of our favorite waterparks in the world. They also have their own water play area on the grounds, with waterslides and other wet & wild fun. Playgrounds and a good kids club, too.

The resort is meters from the beach, although it doesn’t face the sea, it’s very close to a private beach area. It’s an aging property, but still one of the best family resorts in Kuta. In fact, this one might be best for families and not for couples, as the pool areas are dominated by kids at play.

  • Pool: Several, and kids pool/water play area
  • Wifi: Yes
  • Location: Minutes from the sand, the Waterpark, and several shopping centers

Blu-Zea Resort by Double-Six (Formerly The Breezes Bali)

While located only five minutes from the beach, you may not see it much. The grounds of the Blu-Zea are enough for most children and adults to enjoy. The two lagoon-style pools are bordered on one side by a sandy strip like a beach all its own. Blu-Zea has kids rooms and a kids club as well — something to consider when planning spa appointments at their excellent treatment center. This makes it one of the best hotels in Seminyak and one of the best resorts in Bali.

  • Pool: 2
  • Wifi: Yes
  • Location: 5 minutes on foot to the beach, less to restaurants and nightlife.

The Stones Legian

Sleek and modern, the Stones is one of the best hotels in Bali for people who don’t need their Bali hotels to look like Bali hotels. There’s very little Balinese about the Stones, but it’s 5-star luxury in any language. The contemporary style of the Stones would fit into any tropical environment, and its spacious rooms are immaculate. Floor-to-ceiling windows look down at the hotel’s gardens and one of its pools. The kids club is no charge for the first two hours. Here you’re at the southern end of Legian, with Kuta a short walk away.

The Kana Kuta Hotel

If you’re looking for aspects of a luxury hotel in Kuta but want to pay less, then the Kana Kuta Hotel is one of the best hotels in Bali to investigate. The Kana Kuta has many aspects of luxury accommodation, but a lower price than 5-Star hotels in Kuta. That may be because it’s a bit far from the beach: over 20-minute’s walk. That said, there is a free shuttle back and forth to Kuta beach that takes 10 minutes or less.

  • Pool: Yes

Kuta Town House Apartments

This is more of an apartment stay than one of the best hotels in Bali. That said, if you’d like a spacious accommodation with a kitchen, then this is where to stay in Kuta. There are several pools, but the ones near stage 1 & 2 can be cooler because they’re in the shade. Still, you’re around 10 minute’s walk to the beach. The location is close, but the apartments are down a narrow alley. You may have to walk in/out approx 150-200 meters before taxis become an option.

  • Pool: Yes
  • Wifi: Yes
  • Location:10-min to the beach, minutes from multiple shopping options.
  • Additional info: Many taxis won’t drive down the narrow alley to the entrance.

From here, you’re minutes from the beach and the Waterbom Waterpark. The wifi is spotty and breakfast is limited. However, for those who want to be in the heart of the action, this is one of the best hotels in Kuta for families. Like many budget hotels in Bali, the shower and toilet are partially outdoor — shielded from outside viewers, but not inside the bungalow.

Best Hotels in Seminyak & Seminyak Resorts

best hotels in seminyak resorts hotels in bali

Many people come to Seminyak for the best resorts in Bali, but there is much more to the area than spa treatments and 5-star hotels. The dining and nightlife scene is vibrant, yet it is still calm and quiet back in your rooms. There is also an amazing array of boutiques and artisanal products for sale as well. The beaches are beautiful, and surfers can enjoy some waves.

W Bali – Seminyak

Out of the best hotels in Bali, this is definitely one the best hotels in Seminyak. Few hotels in Bali compare to the 5-star treatment here. Expect top-notch service from some the best-trained hospitality service in Bali. Large, spacious, modern rooms have huge, soft beds (unusual in much of Bali). In addition, expect little touches like a Bose Bluetooth sound system and L’occitane toiletries. The largest suites have stocked kitchen and private pools. Hotel Tugu Bali

This beautiful Bali hotel is inside a historical home full of Balinese ornamentation. Many rooms come with an ocean new of a pool view, while some have their own plunge pools. Best Hotels in Ubud & Resorts in Ubud

best ubud resorts hotels in bali best hotels in bali for families

For us, Ubud is our favorite place in Bali. It’s the cultural heart of the island, and it’s where you’ll find more of the traditional activities, dances, and crafts in their highest form. The Balinese temples here are arguably some of the most beautiful in Indonesia, and the rice fields, the coconut plantations, and the jungle surrounding them are some of the most peaceful, beautiful places to wander by scooter, bicycle, or on foot.

Having said that, Ubud is far from the beach. This cultural heart of Bali is also in the heartland, surrounded by jungle and traditional homes and temples. The best resorts in Ubud take advantage of this, using the tropical setting as inspiration for its architecture and design aesthetic.

Komaneka at Bisma

This is 5-Star luxury that’s still walking distance to the heart of Ubud. That’s the start of what makes Komaneka at Bisma one of the best hotels in Ubud…and the best hotels in Bali in general. Rooms are huge, spacious and tastefully designed with Indonesian and modern touches. Each has a sitting area, a walk-in closet, and a large bathroom suite with walk-in showers. Balconies overlook lush landscaping and the stunning view of the valley in front of you. This looks like one of the elite resorts that dot the land past the outskirts of town. Yet the Komaneka at Bisma is only a short walk from the restaurants, galleries and cultural opportunities found in the heart of Ubud.

  • Pool: 2 infinity pools. Some villas have private pools
  • Wifi: Yes
  • Location: 15 minutes on foot to Ubud Palace and all of downtown Ubud.

Oh, and did I mention the personal butler service? Guests enjoy personalized service on a scale that many of the best hotels in Bali can’t match. There are yoga classes, cooking classes, personalized tours of the rice fields, and more. The Chedi is a short drive into town, but an easy walk over to the Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), one of Bali’s most well-known attractions.

Ulun Ubud Resort

Perched above a river and traditional rice terraces, Ulun Ubud Resort is one of the best resorts in Ubud thanks to spectacular views and traditional design. Rooms are large and immaculate, the beds are plush and soft. The sounds of the jungle are ever-present as you drift off to sleep. Bicycles are available to explore the countryside, or instead jump in a free shuttle to town. The real reason you stay at Ulun Ubud, however, is the quality of the room with the quality of the view. Overlooking the valley, views like this make it one of the best hotels in Bali. Family rooms are large and spacious even when adding an extra bed. They also come with a fridge with complimentary drinks.

Best Hotels in Sanur & Best Sanur Resorts

best hotels in sanur bali resorts hotels in bali

Sanur is much calmer and slower-paced than the area around Kuta. It’s also more reasonably priced than Nusa Dua in the south. Sanur still feels like a town where many other places to stay in Bali have lost that sensation to the tourism machine. The beaches aren’t as postcard-perfect as they are in the south, but the calm, shallow waters continue to attract young families.

Bali Hotel Culture & Logistics

where to stay in bali hotels in bali

Beds tend to run hard in Bali hotels. Some of the best resorts in Bali will have soft mattresses and maybe even a pillow menu, but in general, expect beds in Bali hotels to be on the firm side. Cultural experiences are one of the best parts of Bali travel. Take cooking lessons. Go to a traditional dance performance. Join a painting or ceramics class. Try silversmithing or wood carving. Bali is so unique and interesting on so many levels. Get into it!

Massages and spa treatments in Bali are some of our favorites. All the best resorts in Bali have their own spas. The best Bali hotels too. That said, you can usually find cheaper prices by shopping around. The quality of wifi in Bali varies. Some high-end resorts have great wifi. Some don’t. Same goes for budget hotels in Bali. And it changes often. Just because the hotel says it has free wifi doesn’t always mean that it will work consistently. If reliable wifi is important to you, check ahead.

There are loads of great things to do in Bali. You can read all about our family travel tips for Ubud, and the Travel Mad Mum has her own list of Bali activities for families

Getting around Bali

There are lots of taxis in Bali, but we try to only use Bluebird taxis because they use a meter and in general we think that they run a more honest operation. Rideshare apps now operate in Bali, but under dubious legality. At the time of writing Uber is banned and Grab (the Malaysian equivalent) were not technically illegal but banned from operating in front of many of the best Bali resorts and hotels. The situation could change. If you do choose to use Uber or Grab, understand that their drivers will not likely pick you up from a place where many conventional taxi drivers are. We tend to rent scooters in Bali, but don’t recommend this to people without lots of experience riding scooters in Southeast Asia. More on this below.

Health & Safety

This is the tropics, so be prepared. Water, sunscreen, and mosquito repellant should all be a part of your day. If you have a specific brand of sunscreen or mosquito repellant you like, bring it with you. Otherwise, you might not find it — or pay a premium for it.

Scooters in Bali

ubud scooters - best hotels in bali for families

We rent scooters when we visit Bali. Whether you should is your decision. Understand that most travel insurance will not cover accidents on scooters if you don’t have a license to drive one in your home country. If you do decide to rent one, make sure to photograph any and all dents and scratches on the vehicle before you pay. Make sure that you and the renter both agree on everything so you don’t get stuck paying for minor cosmetic repairs later on. Don’t want to ride a scooter? No problem. There are reasonably priced drivers all over Bali, and in many places, you can simply ride a bicycle, too. Or walk. Lots of great places in Bali are walkable.

Monkeys in Bali

Lots of people visit Bali to see the monkeys. Fine. That said, please understand that the monkeys in Bali (specifically the gray macaques that live in Monkey Forest) are not to be trifled with. They are bold and can be dangerous. If you do decide to visit monkey forest, we strongly suggest that you stay back, avoid eye contact and do not feed them, even if you see others doing it.

We also strongly suggest that you zip everything into your backpacks, whether it’s food or not. In fact, don’t bring any food — even zipped into your pack. Macaques can smell it and may try to extract it from the pack, even if you’re wearing it. More than a few people have had their keys, earphones or sunglasses stolen by these hairy little troublemakers, and I know at least two people who went for a rabies shot after getting bit or scratched. The rabies shot was just precautionary, but still no fun. Even if you’re not bitten or scratched, monkeys in Bali — specifically macaques — can be very aggressive and scary for kids. Adults too.
