Best Family Hotels in Penang

Malaysia is one of our favorite countries to explore. We liked it so much that we’ve spent nearly 15 months in the country since 2013. Most of that time was spent in Penang, and we often recommend it as a great starting point for a trip through Southeast Asia.

When to Visit Penang

Penang is warm and humid all year. The wet season is April to November, and the dry season is December to March. Swimming year-round. More on Penang weather and the haze season here.

Areas of Penang

There are lots of places to go and places to stay in Penang, but we’re going to focus primarily on two areas: Georgetown and Batu Ferringhi.

Georgetown is where you’ll find the old colonial architecture that made the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lots to do and see, but it’s also noisier and more hectic than further north. Hotel rooms in Georgetown tend to be smaller but close to lots of the historical Penang attractions.

Batu Ferringhi is the mellower area in the north of the island. Most of Penang’s family resorts are located here, and the area is a little more relaxed and spread out. People stay out in Batu Ferringhi to chill with their feet in the sand. This is also the area where you’ll find the ESCAPE park, Entopia (the Butterfly Park), Penang National Park, and the Spice Garden.

Getting around Penang

Georgetown and Batu Ferringhi are connected by a winding two-lane road. Buses, taxis, and other car hires can make it between the two in 20-60 minutes.

Buses are clean, air-conditioned and (fairly) punctual. The 101 and 102 busses make this route regularly.

For car hire, we recommend using apps like Uber or Grab. Both work well in Penang.

Food in Penang

Any Penang family holiday would be incomplete without trying the vast variety of food in Penang. We love the spicy and non-spicy versions.

Best Family Hotels in Penang

Many of the best hotels in Penang have family room options. That includes Penang family resorts and Penang budget hotels. Look below and find our list of Penang hotels divided into two groups: hotels in Georgetown and hotels in Batu Ferringhi.
