Taiwan Travel Tips — Beyond the Best Taipei Hotels

The best time to visit Taipei is between late October and early May. Out of this, November and April are generally the sweet spots. That’s the low season and the best weather. If you want to avoid typhoon season and the hottest, muggiest months of June through September, consider this.

Getting Around Taipei

Taxis are cheap and plentiful, and the train system is safe and efficient. Buy an EasyCard for trains and the Maokong Gondola once you get there. This makes travel in Taipei much simpler.

Carry the address of your Taipei hotel with you in Chinese characters. Print it before you leave if you have to, or just pick up a hotel business card when you get there and keep it in your pocket. Many taxi drivers don’t speak or read English well. Therefore, having an address in Chinese characters means you can always get back.

See More Than Taipei

Taiwan is so much more than just Taipei. I lived there for about three years and still miss it. I actually feel guilty having written enough here about how safe, wonderful and interesting Taiwan is. All of Taiwan. It’s criminal that so few travelers explore it.

Taiwan has a sleek and modern High-Speed Rail (HSR) system, so you can zip down the island in a matter of hours. It’s very much like Japan’s Shinkansen system (Japanese built, in fact) and a great experience in itself. Affordable, too.

Taipei Weather

Taiwan may be considered Southeast Asia by some, but it’s actually East Asia. Winters here are not pool weather. In fact, Taipei City can get cool and overcast weather at random days of the year. Don’t let the presence of a pool dictate your Taipei hotel choice.

Taiwanese Food — Eat it All!

Taiwan’s Night Markets are one of our favorite places to eat in the world. The food is cheap and delicious. Do not leave Taiwan without spending some time in the best night markets! I’ve written about some of our favorite Taiwanese food, as well.

Best Taipei Apartment Rentals — Where to Stay in Taipei

If you are a family of 4 or more, it may be cheaper to look into some of the best apartment rentals in Taipei. You sacrifice housecleaning, free refills of water and a hotel staff to welcome you home. However, you may end up with more space, yet spending less money.

Another advantage for young families is that you can have your own time in the living room or elsewhere after the kids fall asleep. Hotels are often one room while apartments give you more space and separation.

We now usually compare the price/space/location of apartments with hotels before we decide.

  1. I live in Kaohsiung and blog about what to do in Taiwan with kids – we love Taipei! Have you tried the Amba Hotel or Howard Plaza (has a pool!). We like them both. Also the Novotel near the airport will put a panda bear in your room if traveling with kids – always a hit!

    • Great tips! Thank you Cerise! We *love* Taipei, and Taiwan in general. I lived in Tainan (just north of you in Kaohsiung from 1997-2001 and still have close friends there and in Taipei. We return to Taiwan whenever we can. Miss the people, the food, and the South Cross Highway!
