What to Look for in the Best Travel Pants for Men

What should you look for in the best men’s travel pants? Is it different than for women’s travel pants? In general, no. The best travel pants for men and women share a lot in common. Here are a few aspects of the best travel pants worth looking for.

Durability

One of the most important qualities of the best travel pants for men is durability. If they start to fall apart on the road, then what good are they anyway? The best travel pants for men are made from durable materials and have reliable stitching. Whether you’re buying men’s travel pants or women’s travel pants, they should be made from light-but-rugged material and have good stitching.

Weight

The best travel pants for men are naturally going to be as light as possible. No matter how long you’re traveling for, space and weight are an issue with air travel. Airlines are always changing the rules. For example, they’ve recently started charging more to carry bags over a certain weight. All the more reason for the best men’s travel pants to weigh as little as possible.

Oh, and of course there is the most obvious reason why the best men’s travel pants should be light: you’re carrying them! You have to lug all your stuff wherever you go, and so the lighter it is, the better. The weight of your clothes, shoes, and electronics adds up fast, so each item that weighs less helps.

Packability

In addition to being light, the best travel pants for men need to pack down to the smallest size possible. Like weight, space is usually limited when traveling. That’s why it’s best to have men’s travel pants that will fold or roll up into a compact shape. That way you have more room in your suitcase or backpack for snacks, goofy souvenirs, and other impulse buys.

Wrinkle-Free

The best travel clothing resists wrinkling…or at least incorporates the wrinkles into the style. When it comes to the best travel pants for men or women, most go the wrinkle-resistant path. Do you travel a lot? Or will you? If so, then you’re going to be rolling or folding everything you wear. Then you’ll be stuffing it all into a small backpack or suitcase many, many times. There are some items that look okay if they’re folded just so, but eventually, those items get left behind. They become a nuisance if they take too long to pack. The best travel clothing can be rolled, folded, and stuffed hastily into a bag and still look good when you dislodge it from your pack and put it on.

Quick-Drying

Let me play out a situation I experienced far too often as a young traveler. Donning your favorite jeans, you head out or a meal in Thailand/Mexico/Enter-Tropical-Destination-Here. Was that thunder you heard? Are those dark clouds coming this way? Nah, never mind. Just leave the umbrella at the hotel. It’s a pain to carry around anyway, right? Fast-forward two hours and 15 inches of rain later, and you’re soaked to the bone. There’s no dryer at your hotel, so exactly how long are those jeans going to stay wet? I’ll tell you how long: until you fly home or spend part of your afternoon at a laundromat…if you can find a laundromat.

The best travel clothing dries quickly, and this goes double for the best travel pants for men. Are you considering men’s travel pants made from conventional materials like canvas, cotton or denim? Consider the price and where you’re going. Most of the best travel pants for men use synthetic materials that dry in a few hours in the sun.

Convertibility

Some of the best men’s travel pants have zip-off legs so that they can become shorts in a flash. They are often called “convertible” travel pants. So if the men’s travel pants you find have the word “convertible” in the description, that usually means that you have two clothing options, not one.

There are pros and cons to men’s convertible travel pants. The pros are the versatility, as well as the space you can save if you’re traveling very light. For example, if you want to travel carry-on only, then consider men’s convertible travel pants. Why? Because it gives you both trousers and shorts in one item of clothing. No need for one pair of each.

The downside to men’s convertible travel pants? Style. The biggest problem I have with most men’s convertible travel pants is that they look like convertible travel pants. With most brands, it’s obvious that the legs zip off. At best this is not stylish. At worst it screams “tourist” to anyone in the know. You might as well wear white socks with Tevas. There are some brands who handle the zip-off part better than others.

Style

Many of the best travel pants for men don’t look like travel pants. They just look like a decent pair of trousers. Sure, some men’s travel pants are made for the practicalities of the trail. Yet other styles of the best travel pants for men look good when worn into an opera or fancy restaurant.

When considering the best men’s travel pants for you, think about where you’re going and when and where you’ll wear them. The backpacker dad taking his kids to the orangutans of Sumatra should look for men’s travel pants that are, lightweight, technical and rugged. On the other hand, the dashing dude exploring Barcelona with his teens is worried less about specialized pockets and more about travel pants that look decent in a nice restaurant.

Pockets, Storage & Safety

When I’m looking for the best men’s travel pants for me, one of the first things I look for is pocket placement. I’m kind of a pocket nerd. I look for where I’ll put my phone, my earbuds, my passports, etc. Deep pockets are best, where spare change won’t spill out easily. I also look for zippered back pockets to prevent easy pick-pocketing. Velcro works, too, but may wear out earlier than zippers.

The best travel pants for men will have travel-specific storage and safety features. There are men’s travel pants with multiple pockets and there are men’s travel pants with secret pockets. But beware. Just because a pair of travel pants has 27 pockets doesn’t mean it’s the best men’s travel clothing ever. Specialized pockets and secret storage spaces can be very useful. They can also be superfluous bells and whistles. It all depends on your needs. Think about where you’re going and what you think you’ll use, and buy accordingly. Men’s travel pants tend to have more pockets — for better or worse.

Fit & Cut

The nature of the best travel clothing for men is something that you can wear during any number of travel-specific situations. That includes, hiking, napping in an airport and sitting on a bus for seven hours. The best travel pants for men should be multi-functional. They should also be the best travel pants for long flights, the best pants for travel in Europe and possibly the best pants for hiking, as well.

Some of the best travel pants for men are made from nylon and polyester-blend material. That way, they stretch and give when they need to. When considering the best travel pants for long flights, jeans are out. Canvas pants too. The best travel pants for long flights or long drives on a bus will stretch and adjust to your efforts to get comfortable. Same does for outdoors activities. For example, let’s say that you’re in economy class and need to shift your weight. Or you’re hiking in Spain or a steep incline in the mountains of Japan. Some of the best travel pants for men are made from a material that will stretch when denim or canvas won’t.

Consider the Cut

The cut of the pants also plays an important factor. In fact, some of the best travel pants for men barely use stretchy material at all. Instead, they achieve more comfort and fluid body movement through strategic tailoring. Look for articulated knees in the best men’s and travel pants. This is when small triangular folds are sewn into the side of the knee area of the pants. The pants take on a shape closer to the bend of the knee itself, which allows for more freedom of movement. Another feature of the best men’s travel pants is a gusseted crotch. This is a triangular or diamond-shaped patch of cloth that is sewn into the crotch area, which allows for some extra space and comfort.

Here are some of the best men’s travel pants money can buy. Each design has their advantages & disadvantages, so read through the description to see which are best for you.

Best Comfortable Travel Pants for Men

Okay, let’s get something straight right away: ALL of the best travel pants for men are comfortable. That’s part of what makes them the best pants for travel. The stretchiest of these also make some of the best travel pants for long flights, as well.

Eddie Bauer Horizon Guide Pro Men’s Travel Pants

Designed for hikers, Eddie Bauer’s Horizon Guide men’s travel pants are some of the most comfortable travel pants for a number of reasons. The nylon/spandex blend means that they dry fast and stretch easily. Articulated knees, as well. You can lift your knee above your waist without resistance. Side zip cargo pockets your belongings. They are designed for walking but are some of the most comfortable travel pants, as well.

What makes the Guide Pro design some of the best travel pants for men are the extras. For example, Polygiene Odor Control helps keep your BO at bay, while Stormrepel DWR Finish keeps moisture out. Freeshade Sun Protection shelters you up to UV 50+. Protection from the sun, rain and my own stinky smells? That’s a great pair of men’s travel pants.

Volcom Frickin Modern Fit Chino Men’s Travel Pants

Volcom’s chinos make our list of best comfortable travel pants for men thanks to comfort, simplicity, and versatility. The cotton/recycled polyester material is tough but breathable and with enough stretch for a full range of motion. The legs are tapered and the waist is low so they have a hip cut still looks good with nice shoes and a tucked-in shirt at a restaurant. Great for the beach, but still some of the best bants for travel in Europe.

The cut is slimmer than some like, so if you want more room, then size up. Consult their sizing chart, too. The pockets could be deeper, but the only thing I don’t like about these comfortable travel pants is having the (small) logo on the inside of the knee.

Columbia Flex ROC Men’s Travel Pants

Columbia makes some durable, stylish and comfortable travel pants for men. For many travelers, this style of men’s travel pants hits the happy medium between formal and informal. Just keep in mind that men’s travel pants with a knife pocket is a nice addition for the outdoors, but not for airport security. The material is mostly cotton, which means it breathes but stretches less. These are durable and comfortable travel pants, but wouldn’t be the top quick dry travel pants on this list.

The Columbia Men’s ROC men’s travel pants have a zipper security pocket on the right-hand side. I wish the back pockets zipped up as well. Also, I might suggest sizing up with Columbia travel pants.

prAna Stretch Zion Men’s Travel Pants

When I think of prAna, I think of rock climbing gear, but their Zion line of travel pants for men has quickly become some of the best men’s travel pants on the market.

Made from 97% nylon and 3% spandex, they stretch and give everywhere you want them to. Scotchguard water resistance means that they won’t soak through if you get caught in a storm. Even when they do get wet, don’t worry since prAna’s Stretch Zion material makes them quick-dry travel pants.

These men’s travel pants have a single cargo pocket that opens from both the top and the side, making it a perfect place to stash your passport with easy access while sitting or standing.

I also like the mesh inner pockets and the vented gusset. These can help keep you cooler in hot, humid environments. Great for Southeast Asia, but also some of the best pants for travel in Europe. If you like a slim fit, then keep in mind that the legs of the Zion pants are rather loose. If you want to roll them up, dual side cuff snaps on the interior keep them up.Searching for the best travel pants? Best Men’s Travel Pants with Pockets

When looking for the best travel pants for men, some people want pockets more than others. I would certainly fall into this camp. When I’m looking for travel pants with pockets, I’m looking beyond a place to put my wallet and keys. Here are a few of the best travel pants with pockets that I’d recommend.

Mountain Hardwear AP Men’s Travel Pants

I’ve been a fan of Mountain Hardwear for years, and all my gear from them has proven itself time and again. They make some of the best travel pants for men out there, and their AP men’s travel pants are just one example.

Made from a blend of cotton and nylon, they are super durable in the field and stretchier than you might think. That said, the cotton blend means they don’t dry as fast as a full-synthetic material. I like the back zippered pockets, but what I love most is the front phone pocket on the thigh. Seriously: I don’t know why more of the best travel clothing brands don’t design for this more often. I love being able to grab my phone quickly without having to fish around in a conventional front pocket.

Another design element that raises these to the level of best travel pants for men: reflective elements. You have them in the back pockets and on some belt loops, but what I like is the reflective elements inside the right pant leg. Why there? So when you roll up the leg to ride a bicycle, you have a reflective element right over your ankle. This makes these the best travel pants for men on two wheels.

Tru Spec 24-7 Vector Men’s Pants

Here’s one for the pocket nerds out there. If you’re looking for travel pants with pockets, then the Tru Spec Vector Pants have you covered. They have a variety of storage options to carry a wide variety of items on your person. The back pockets and front slash pockets both have specialized accessory pockets. The side cargo pockets also have sliding utility pockets, for easy access. It’s a good thing too. The cargo pockets are rather tight and require several movements to put something in or take something out. The smaller cargo pockets also mean that they stay closer to the leg and don’t flop around waiting to snag on something.

The polyester blend material doesn’t stretch a lot, but a gusseted crotch and articulated knees mean that you get lots of freedom of movement. The silicone inner waistband expands when needed, so you can eat all you want at that night market and not have to adjust your pants too much.

In truth, these travel pants for men are actually tactical pants designed for professionals in emergency care, law enforcement, and outdoor use. They still work great as men’s travel pants and don’t look too “commando” to wear through airport security. Just make sure to empty all the pockets when you go through the metal detector!

Mountain Khakis Men’s Camber 107 Classic Fit Men’s Pants

The Camber 107 makes our list of best travel pants for men thanks to a rugged, comfortable build and great pocket design. Seams and pockets here are all reinforced, and the knees have a double layer of fabric. Yet these cotton pants have 2% spandex for a little give, and a gusseted crotch for more freedom of movement. They don’t dry as fast as a nylon/polyester mix, but they’ll last just as long or longer.

The Mountain Khakis Camber are great travel pants with pockets. These include a phone pocket on the right thigh with a button closure so it stays put. Comes in Classic, Slim, and Relaxed fit.

5.11 Men’s STRYKE Tactical Cargo Pants with Flex-Tac

Another specialized pair or men’s travel pants with pockets. Or rather technical pants that double as some of the best travel pants for men. As the name suggests, these pants are designed for those who work at tactical-related fields such as police, park rangers, and military personnel. So why do I think these are great travel pants for men? It’s because the STRYKE cargo are durable men’s pants with lots of pockets.

When it comes to the best men’s travel pants with pockets, the 5.11 Stryke design are fairly specialized. They have a total of 12 pockets, including deep side cargo pockets. The stitching is triple-reinforced, and the 65% polyester/35% cotton ripstop material is super durable despite being lightweight.

The pockets and design are a great feature for the field, but the design doesn’t look natural in a cafe or art gallery. Perhaps not the best pants for travel in Europe. That said, for anyone planning lots of time outdoors, these could be the best travel pants for you. Despite their ruggedness, a gusseted crotch, articulated knees, and a self-adjusting waistband make them comfortable all day long.

Best Lightweight Travel Pants for Men

Lots of travel situations demand lightweight clothing. For example, a lighter pack means less to carry and fewer baggage fees at airports. Lightweight pants are also often some of the best travel pants for long flights. Here are a few of the best lightweight travel pants for men to choose from.

Goodthreads 5-Pocket Chino Man’s Travel Pants

The Goodthreads line is an Amazon brand. These 5-pocket chinos make our list of best travel pants for men thanks to their affordability and value for money. I’d consider them good lightweight travel pants for business casual occasions, as well.

Despite being chinos, they have the look and feel of a pair of Levi’s. But instead of denim, they are made from cotton with 1% of spandex. That means they’re much softer than jeans, and with a bit of stretch. They come in slim fit but have slightly more room than usual slim fit. Some of the best pants for travel in Europe during the warmer months, but you might want something thicker once winter comes along.

UNIONBAY makes our list of best travel pants for men thanks to comfort and weight. Their 94% nylon/6% spandex blend makes them great lightweight travel pants. They have plenty of stretch and dry quickly. These also come with UPF50 sun protection.

The pockets of these men’s travel pants are mesh-lined, which means they’re even lighter and dry faster. That makes them some of the best pants for backpacking Southeast Asia and the best pants for travel in Europe during the summer. We also like that there are three zippered pockets: the pocket on the right thigh as well as both back pockets. All of the pockets could be deeper, but having zippered pockets means that more items are secure.

Best Convertible Travel Pants for Men

If you’re considering traveling carry-on only, one of the best ways to save space is with convertible travel pants for men. It’s a 2-for-1: you get both shorts and a pair of trousers without having to carry two items of clothing. Disclosure: many of the best convertible travel pants aren’t the most stylish items. Indeed, they still look like travel pants. But it’s hard to beat their functionality. Here are a few specific men’s convertible travel pants that we’d recommend.

White Sierra Trail Convertible Travel Pants for Men

These 100% nylon zip-off trousers make our list of best convertible travel pants for men thanks to a durable, lightweight construction and decent price. The White Sierra Men’s Convertible pants are quick-dry travel pants made with nylon material so they pack small. The Teflon and UPF coating of these convertible travel pants add extra protection from stains and the sun. Both legs zip off to become shorts, but can quickly be zipped on when needed. The zippers have a small “L” and “R” on them to make sure you’re always zipping the correct leg.

White Sierra Men’s Convertible Pants also have a built-in webbing belt and leg openings to make it easier to roll up or put on while wearing boots. The bottom isn’t a slim fit, even when the leg openings are attached. All pockets are velcro — not my first choice (starts to show wear after a while) but better than buttons or flaps for me.

Columbia Silver Ridge Men’s Convertible Travel Pants

The Columbia Men’s Silver Ridge Convertible Pants are some of the most popular men’s travel pants around. These lightweight, quick-drying travel pants for men are made from a nylon/polyester blend. Columbia’s proprietary Omni-shade and Omni-shield features help to protect you from rain and sun.

These great men’s travel pants also have a zippered security pocket. The two back pockets and two side cargo pockets use velcro. The zippers to convert to shorts are a little higher than in most convertible travel pants: higher above the knee. I personally like this, but it’s up to your taste.
