Why Do You Need Travel Power Adapters?

How many electronic devices do you carry with you? It might surprise you. It certainly surprised me. Between my wife and my kids, we have 24, — count them: TWENTY FOUR — devices that need charging

We may carry more gear than some families. There are many families who carry more. Either way, you can see how having a few of the best power adapters for travel can be useful, right?

Tips for the Best Power Adapters for Travel

Even the best power adapters for travel aren’t that expensive, but you can get more value for your money with the following information.

Buy More Than One

In order to keep everything properly charged, we highly recommend in investing in at least two of the best travel power adapters. We have two, and we fight over them regularly. Sometimes I need to use one in a different room while I work, which leaves only one for three people to share.

Look for USB Ports

Many of your devices won’t need to plug directly into the wall. Instead, they charge using a USB port. Many of the best travel power adapters have at least one USB port. Some have four. This means that you can charge multiple devices from just one outlet.

Invest in a Multi-USB Port

If you have a lot of phones, tablets, and other USB-charging devices, then invest in a multi-USB port like this one. It’s not a replacement for the best travel power adapters — for example, I can’t charge my camera batteries via USB — but it can help take the burden off of one plug.

Brings an Extension Cord or Plug Strip

Some hotels, airports, and cafes have awkwardly-placed power outlets. They may be far from a chair or other comfortable place to sit. For this, an extension cord can make it easier to power up while sitting comfortably.

Sliding Plug Adapters vs Component Adapters.

There are different types of plug adapters. For example, for my MacBook Pro, Apple sells a kit with detachable plugs to fit the world’s outlets. It works, but you also have to keep track of lots or small pieces. They’re easier to lose.

Then there are sliding plug adapters. Most of the best travel power adapters are all-in-one. Well, almost all. The majority of devices only cover the most traveled areas. Instead of carrying adapters for Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas separately, you can buy one that covers all (or almost all) of them.

This saves you storage space and the stress of figuring out which plug adapter goes where. They slide out one by one at the push of a button. We prefer these, and our list of best power adapters reflects that.

Plug Types

According to the International Electrotechnical Commission, there are 14 different types of plug outlet in the world.

MOST COMMONLY USED PLUG TYPES:

  • A: used in 55 countries, including Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, the USA, and more.
  • C used in 138 countries, including Brazil, Russia, and much of Europe and Africa.
  • F: used in 74 countries and is shaped exactly like Type C. The difference between type C and type F is the size of two round pins. Type F only accepts 4.8mm, whereas type C accepts 4.0-4.8mm pins.
  • G: used in 51 countries, including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Uganda, the UAE, the UK, and more.
  • I:  used in 2o countries, including Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and more.

In some countries, several plug outlets may be available. For example, when we were in Lombok, Indonesia, we saw mainly type C plug outlets which are commonly used in the Netherlands, Spain, and other European countries. However, we also saw type G plug outlets, which are commonly used in the UK, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

Before you buy one of the best travel power adapters, be sure to know what plug types are needed for your travel. The best power adaptors are only useful if they work where you’re going! Most of the universal plug adaptors listed in this post can be used for the destinations you’re likely to go.

Plug Adapters are NOT Voltage Converters

Before you decide on the best travel power adaptor for you, let’s make something clear: plug adapters and voltage converters are not the same things. A plug adapter allows you to connect your device to outlets in a different country. A voltage converter makes sure that your device gets the same level of electricity (voltage) of the country it was built for.

There are two main voltage levels in the world: North America, Japan, Taiwan uses 110/125V. Most of Europe and the rest of the world (most of it, anyway) use 220/240V. Power converters and transformers adjust the voltage of electricity to what your devices are accustomed to.

Dual Voltage vs Non-Dual Voltage

Now here’s the good news: most of the most important devices you’re carrying can adapt to whatever country’s voltage you’re using. These are called dual (or wide) voltage devices, and they can be plugged just about anywhere.

Common Dual (Wide) Voltage Devices
  • Laptops
  • Phones
  • Tablets
  • Camera Batteries
  • Bluetooth speakers
  • GoPros
  • Electric Shavers
  • Handheld game systems
  • GPS systems
  • Kindles and other reading tablets
  • USB-charging flashlights

There are many other items that require a power converter. Always check before plugging these in. You don’t want anything damaged!

Common non-dual voltage items

The below items (may) require a power converter — unless, of course, it’s labeled as a dual voltage appliance. No one’s traveling with a refrigerator I think. That said, here are a few you items that commonly need a voltage converter.

  • Hairdryers
  • Hair curlers
  • Irons
  • Hot water heaters
  • Microwaves
  • Refrigerators
  • Coffee makers

Always, always check the voltage info before plugging in!

Note: The gear recommended here is for plug adapters, NOT voltage converters.
