Like a good backpack, your shoes often stay on you all day, every day when you’re traveling. Expect a lot of walking, whether you’re in transit or just simply exploring. You need something that’s comfortable to walk around in, but strong enough to go the distance. If you’re looking for the best travel shoes for Europe, then you need a pair that is comfortable but might look nice with a dress or a pair of pants if you go out for dinner. In contrast, perhaps you’re headed to Vietnam or elsewhere in Southeast Asia for a few months. The best shoes for backpacking might be more appropriate. For example, some hiking shoes or a pair of sneakers or sandals.

The Best Shoes for Travel

I’ve been traveling and/or living abroad since 1997. During that time, I’ve talked to hundreds of travelers about footwear. Opinions vary on what are the best men’s travel shoes, the best women’s travel shoes and the best travel shoes for kids. On my podcast, I’ve discussed everything from the best boots for Nepal to the best sandals for South America.

Families like the Clarks from episode #4 invested very little in shoes. Instead of the best walking shoes or the best hiking boots, they just bought cheap flea market flip-flops whenever the latest pair gave out. It worked for them not to buy the best travel shoes, and I know many people who do this, but of course, this is usually for when you’re staying somewhere warm. This didn’t work for us, however. Cheap flip-flops rarely have a grip on the bottom. I slipped enough on wet sidewalks that I felt overly anxious wearing them when it rained. And it rains a LOT in Southeast Asia.

Other families invest a considerable amount of money to buy the best travel shoes, simply because their travel plans require it. For example, let’s say you’re planning to go to Base Camp of Mount Everest. We’ve known families who did it. The Johnson family from episode #22, did, as did the Jones family from episode #150. Some adventures require specialized shoes that are designed for such environments. Other’s don’t require the best travel shoes.

Everyone’s needs are different, but having at least one pair of the best travel shoes, the best walking shoes or the best hiking boots may save your feet and legs in the end. Below, I break down some of our best travel shoes recommendations.

BEST WOMEN’S TRAVEL SHOES

I’ve divided up my footwear recommendations into two main sections: best men’s travel shoes and best women’s travel shoes. In addition, there are a few other more specialized sections such as best slip-on shoes for travel, best hiking shoes for men and women and best travel shoes for Europe. We’ll start with best women’s travel shoes and boots.

Best Walking Shoes for Women

The best walking shoes for women also double as some of the best travel shoes for Europe, but not always. Look at the shoes on this list and see what fits your tastes.

Sketchers Go Walk

I recommended these as some of the best men’s travel shoes, but they’re also some of the best women’s walking shoes for travel, as well. We first heard about these from my mom. She had a pair and loved them so much that she insisted Keiko and our daughter get some. And I’ll admit it: I kind of rolled my eyes at first. Why? Well, I’ve been living out of the US for so long that I hadn’t witnessed the rise of Skechers as a reputable brand. The last I had paid attention was when Britney Spears endorsed them in the early 2000’s.

But here’s the deal: Sketchers now makes some of the best walking shoes for women. The Go Walk line is lightweight, super-comfortable and reasonably priced. The knit top means they’re breathable and easy to pack. The memory foam inside means they form to your feet. Wear them with or without socks, and they also come in a variety of colors. These could be for a South America, Southeast Asia or even comfortable walking shoes for Europe as well.

Merrell Moab 2 Ventilator Low Women’s Hiking Boot

We love Merrel shoes, and these are some of the best women’s hiking shoes ever. The top suede and mesh form-fits your foot while remaining breathable. The inside has an EVA midsole and footbed with heel and arch support. The bottom is a Vibram grip for the best traction. At 772G (1 pound, 11 ounces), they’re not as lightweight as most of the best travel shoes for women, but considerably light when it comes to the best hiking boots for women.

Salomon Speedcross 4 Women’s Hiking Shoes

These are actually trail runners but also serve as some of the best women’s hiking shoes, as well. Built for traction and the elements, the Speedcross 4 has a top that’s resistant to water and scuffs. The PVC toe box adds extra impact protection. Underneath, you have some serious tread — great for the outdoors, but maybe over-the-top if only spending time in urban environments. Check out the funky color combinations, as well.

One of the things I like best about Salomon shoes is their lace design. Super-thin yet strong, their Quicklace system lets you unlace or lace up in seconds…even with one hand. Why more shoes don’t have this yet is beyond me.

Converse Women’s Chuck Taylor All Star Shoreline Low Top Sneaker

A small tweak to a timeless classic. Chuck’s have always been some of the best travel shoes for men and women. They’re light, they pack small, and they go with everything. And if they get dirty (inevitable) they’re easy to clean, even though I tend to prefer the weathered look they get after a few weeks on the road. The only problem I have with Chuck Taylors is that they’re lace-ups. It takes extra time getting them on and off, and when you’re in a shoes-off household, that makes you stop wearing them.

Enter the Shoreline Low Top. These have fixed laces and an elastic collar around the ankle to make them easy to slip on and off. They look great in the classic white or black, but if you want your own style there are dozens of colors to choose from. The only other suggestion I would make is to consider buying insoles if you think you’ll need them, as Converse don’t have a lot of support. If you do get insoles, consider sizing up.

For decades, Clarks has made some of the best men’s walking shoes for travel. The Un.Ravel line is a great example of their craftsmanship. The combination of a rubber sole and an EVA “ultra flex” outsole means you get durability, comfort and lightweight performance all day.

The lambskin lining and leather insole prevent blisters, and Clarks’ own ventilation system means moist air escapes through vents in the shoe. The design looks good with jeans or travel pants but perhaps not with formal wear. But they are perfect for city escapes and some of the best travel shoes for Europe.

Børn Men’s Baker Slip-on Walking Shoes

I’ve had several pairs of Børn walking shoes like these over the years and I’d consider them stylish walking shoes for Europe. You can walk all day in them. I certainly have. They have a unique footbed that is extremely comfortable even after all-day wear.

Slip-on travel shoes like these look good scuffed up or finely polished. They’re super comfortable, super durable and look great with jeans or a number or travel pants. They may not be the best shoes for backpacking Europe in the summer unless you bring sneakers along as well. That said, I would consider these some of the best travel shoes for Europe in fall and winter.

The 2.Zerogrand Stitchlite Oxford makes our shortlist of the best men’s travel shoes thanks to comfort and style. They have the look of a wingtip but pack down much smaller. Not really for the trail or the dirt road, these kicks are still some of the best travel shoes for Europe or any other city escape.

Super cool and super lightweight, the 2.Zerogrand line weighs much less than similar looking leather shoes. The knit top part is breathable, while the bottom rubber sole is comfortable and impact resistant.

Clarks Men’s Desert Chukka Boot

Another Clarks classic, the Desert Chukka Boot has been one of the most popular men’s travel shoes for years. They make a simple but bold style statement and are incredibly comfortable after hours of walking. One of the keys is the lining and the crepe rubber sole which makes for a lower impact.

Lots of people report needing a break-in period for wear, as well as sizing down to fit since the Chukka boot runs large. Consider a half-size smaller and a pre-travel period to get them just right.

Best Men’s Slip-On Shoes for Travel

As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of great travel destinations where people take their shoes off at home and elsewhere. Most people know that Japan is like this, but it’s also the norm to take your shoes off when entering a home or temple in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, and many other places. Many of the best travel shoes on our list are slip-on, but here are a few more of the best slip-on shoes for travel. Both are for men and women.

Merrell Men’s Moab Adventure MOC Hiking Shoe

I bought a pair of these before we left for San Miguel de Allende in January 2018. I brought three pairs of shoes with me: some gym shoes, a pair of flip-flops, and these Merrell Moabs. Probably 90% of my walking in Mexico since have been in these shoes and I can’t recommend them enough. They’re tough and rugged with a great Vibram grippy outer sole. Yet inside they have an EVA footbed and midsole. This combination makes them comfortable yet helps me feel stable on trails, unpaved roads and the jagged uneven cobblestone streets on San Miguel.

I wore them every day during the rainy season here — when many roads turn to small rivers — and my feet never got wet. Not once. And despite wearing them every day for nearly ten months thus far, they don’t smell. At all. Merrell’s organic odor control probably has something to do with it.

They are some of the most comfortable walking shoes I’ve ever owned. They are slip-on, of course, but they hold my feet well enough that I’m completely confident walking on wet inclines and other uncertain terrain. They’re great on sidewalks and offroad and look great with jeans or travel pants. The only downside I see is that some of you may not like the look with shorts.

Blundstone Unisex Super 550 Series Boot

Originally from Tasmania, Australia, these classic slip-on boots are rugged, stylish and comfortable. They go with just about anything, and they last forever, too. The double pull-tabs make them easy to put on and take off. The weight and leather exterior make them better in cooler temperatures, but I stand by them year-long. I had a pair in Taiwan years ago for motorcycle trips, and they lasted me a decade after that.

Vans

Don’t mess with a classic. Vans are comfy, easy to slip on/off and come in a mind-boggling array of colors and styles. They’re canvas, which means they’re lightweight and easy to pack. It also means that they’re washable — I’ve washed my Vans multiple times.

On the downside, Vans don’t have much traction and aren’t made to last as long as some of the other best travel shoes on this list. For example, they show wear and tear earlier than some of the other best walking shoes on this list. That said, that’s part of what makes them look cool after a while. Also, I highly recommend getting cushioned insoles.

Skechers Men’s Equalizer Persistent Slip-On Sneaker

Another great slip-on shoe for travel. The breathable mesh keeps your feet cooler in hot & humid places. The shock-absorbing midsole and memory foam insole make them as comfortable as house slippers. Consult the sizing chart as they tend to be a half-size larger than some of the other best men’s travel shoes on this list.

How to Choose the Best Shoes for Travel

Everyone’s travel needs are different. Some of you need comfortable walking shoes for Europe that are good for standing in museums all day. Others need the best shoes for backpacking: rugged, waterproof, and durable in the wild. Sometimes a pricey pair of hiking boots is exactly what’s needed. Yet there are other times where a simple pair of loafers, sneakers or flip-flops are fine. Regardless of your needs or your budget, choosing the best travel shoes or the best walking shoes can be as important as picking the right travel luggage. Read on to see what kind of walking, hiking or backpacking shoes are best for you.

Choosing the Best Travel Shoes for YOU

Not all travel is the same. Want to visit Barcelona, Valencia and other cities of Spain? Then you’re in need of the best travel shoes for Europe: something stylish and good for walking cobblestones and concrete. In contrast, what if you plan to trek through the jungles of Sumatra? Then you might consider a sturdy hiking boot or sports sandal with a grip.

There is no shoe for all travel types of travel. For instance, the best travel shoes for Europe are not necessarily the best travel shoes for Southeast Asia. The best men’s travel shoes may not be the same for women. Before you start researching the best travel shoes for you and your trip, ask yourself these questions:

What will you be doing?

When it comes to the best travel shoes for some people, context is everything. Someone walking the streets of Kyoto or Tokyo in the middle of winter will need a very different shoe than someone exploring Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula at the same time. Do you need travel shoes for Europe that look presentable when worn to a nice restaurant? Or are you headed to Bali in the rainy season and need something waterproof?

Where will you be?

For most people looking for the best travel shoes for men and women, this question is more about climate. Do you need travel footwear that keeps your feet warm or cool? Is rain an issue? Are you trekking the Himalayas and want specialized gear, or are you on the beach or a city escape? However, consider culture as well. Many countries take their shoes off in certain places, and it can be a real pain to put on certain lace-up shoes several times a day.

Slip-on or lace-up?

I know I just mentioned it above, but when choosing the best travel shoes I think it’s worth covering this more thoroughly. Should you get slip-on shoes for your trip, or would lace-ups be better? For example, if you’re doing serious hiking in the mountains, a good pair of lace-up hiking boots are hard to beat. On the other hand, we think that the best travel shoes for Japan and other Asian countries are the slip-on kind. In countries like Japan, you frequently don’t wear shoes in the home, or in temples, traditional hotels, and many other places. Even many restaurants require you to take your shoes off before entering. There are similar household customs in Thailand and Malaysia. Same in Vietnam, Korea and elsewhere.

Our family lived in Tokyo for 13 years, and we’re in and out of Japan all the time, so we really appreciate slip-on shoes. Or at least shoes that don’t have to be laced up every time. It adds up to a lot of time and trouble, actually. Wearing the best slip-on shoes is so much more convenient —especially if you’re carrying a backpack or holding a child. It’s to a point now where I won’t buy a pair of shoes unless I can put them on standing up with one hand only.

How much packing space do you have?

How many bags are you carrying? That will help determine how much space you have to pack travel shoes for your trip. If you’re traveling with a suitcase or other check-in luggage, then you’ll have plenty of room to bring shoes and hiking boots if you really want to. That said, if you’re traveling with carry-on luggage only, then you may need to limit footwear to one or two pairs total.

It doesn’t matter if you need the best shoes for backpacking Mexico, Monaco or Malaysia, you can only carry as much as your luggage will allow.

How’s your budget?

You can spend a lot of money on the best travel shoes for Europe, Mexico or the Middle East, but sometimes you don’t have to. Some of the best men’s travel shoes cost well over USD $100. Some of the best women’s travel shoes cost even more. Would you get your money’s worth out of them? Probably, but you don’t really need the best hiking boots to just to walk around a city or beach town. Consider where you’re going and whatyour needs are first.

What to Look for in the Best Shoes for Travel

Travel shoes 1 VW

Whether it’s comfortable walking shoes for Europe or sturdy hiking boots for the Appalachian Trail, the world’s best travel shoes share many of the same characteristics. Whether you’re looking for the best men’s travel shoes or the best women’s travel shoes, keep these aspects in mind.

Comfort

This is the most important aspect of any travel footwear. Whether you’re looking for the best comfortable walking shoes for Europe or hiking boots for Patagonia, comfort is key. The best travel shoes for men and women must be comfortable enough to wear all day, every day for as long as you need them. The best travel shoe brands have different solutions to the comfort issue but make this your top priority.

Durability

The best travel shoes for women and men are going to last for a long time. They will endure harsh treatment and still remain comfortable and intact. Only the best travel shoes will maintain structural integrity after being worn all day every day for months on end.

Odor Resistance

Speaking of shoes being worn all day every day, for some people, stinky feet can be a problem. Lots of the best travel shoes and the best hiking boots come with anti-bacterial features to keep smells to a minimum. This matters even more in countries where you take your shoes off in homes, restaurants and temples.

Water Resistance / Quick Drying

Some of the best travel shoes for men and women keep your feet dry in the rain, while others may not. Materials like Gore-tex may improve the best travel shoes’ resistance to water, but they also up the price tag considerably.

Think about how important it is to keep your feet dry. If you’re going somewhere cold and wet (say, Ireland, Canada or Northern Spain in the winter), then Gore-tex and similar materials are a great advantage. But if you’re in Thailand? Or the Pacific coast of Mexico? It’s warm, and even if you get drenched, you’ll have enough sunshine to dry everything out. In these situations, then about travel shoes that dry quickly in the sun.

Size, Weight & Packability

Any shoes for travel will add some weight to your backpack, but the best travel shoes will be as light as possible. When considering the weight of your travel shoes, remember that not only will they take up room in your bag and make it heavier. They also make your feet heavier when you wear them! Also, if you need big heavy hiking boots, plan out how (or if) you’ll pack them. You may just want to wear them on every flight. On the other hand, light canvas shoes like Vans and Converse smush down nicely into many backpacks.

Traction

Different trips require different levels of traction on your shoes. For example, if you’re just walking around Mexico City then any shoe will do. But if you’re doing any outdoor activities, or walking on rough terrain, then shoes with a grip can be very useful. The best travel shoes have traction and grip so that you can walk confidently regardless if it’s a wet sidewalk or a mountain trail.

Style

This aspect of the best travel shoes for women and men is completely subjective. Maybe you care, or maybe you don’t. But if you’re traveling in cities and plan to enjoy some fine dining, it’s worth considering. Let’s admit it: Tevas are great sandals, but no matter how you accessorize, they just don’t look appropriate at a white-tablecloth restaurant, do they? Personally, I don’t care, but I gave up on looking stylish years ago. Just ask my kids.

Tips For Buying the Best Shoes for Travel

When it comes to the best shoes for travel, your personal style is important. That said, here are a few tips to consider before buying any of the best travel shoes listed below.

  • Wear them for at least a week before you leave: Better to know how they feel and break them in a bit before you hit the road.
  • Consider the socks: A nice pair of sweat-wicking socks in hot climates or a warm pair of smart wool socks in cold places can make a huge difference.
  • Do you need insoles?: If you know you’ll be walking a lot, then consider some good insoles to make the walk more comfortable. Many of the best travel shoes listed here have their own shock-absorption solutions, but brands like Vans & Converse could always use a little more cushioning.
  • Go with darker colors: White sneakers don’t stay white for long. Buy something that can bear a stain or two of mud, wine, or raspberry gelato.
  • Kids need new shoes fast: Your feet have stopped growing. Theirs haven’t. Kids wear out/grow out of shoes so quickly. Some kids need a new pair in 4-6 months.
