Rinjani Lodge Review
Magical Stay in Senaru, Lombok

We’ve loved every part of Indonesia we visited thus far: all over Bali, and Bukit Lawang, and Berastagi in Sumatra.

Lombok was new to us, and we’ve had an amazing time exploring Lombok with kids. One of the top highlights has been our time in Rinjani Lodge. Perched on a peak facing Mount Rinjani, the Rinjani Lodge offers exceptional family accommodation in Senaru, Lombok.

Want the ambiance of a romantic resort that welcomes kids as well? The Rinjani Lodge has what you’re looking for.

Exceptional Family Accommodation in Senaru, Lombok Rinjani Lodge Review

The Rinjani Lodge is located in Senaru, the northern part of Lombok. Senaru is home to several of Lombok’s most famous and beautiful waterfalls. The two most famous Lombok waterfalls are Air Terjun Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile. And the park entrance to reach them is less than two minutes from the Rinjani Lodge’s front step.

We arrived at the Rinjani Lodge at the tail end of the rainy season. Several porters and staff with umbrellas greeted us at the car to guide us in. After checking in at reception, we were led to our room.

The room felt both rustic and luxurious. The high ceilings were made of thatch and wood, while the polished marble floors and decorative towels told me this was no ordinary hut.

Keiko appreciated the ample closet space, which allowed us to put everything out of the way. I appreciated the thick wooden desk behind the bed to work later that evening.

Our expansive 2nd-story villa had two king-size beds. One of the beds even had an extra bed hidden underneath. So if you have three kids, you still can stay in one room together as a family.

Each room has air conditioning, ceiling fans, a safe, DVD players, and satellite TV although we didn’t watch any. There is also a mini-fridge with complimentary water bottles and water heater for the tea and coffee provided.

The stone bathroom was more than spacious enough for our all four of us to navigate without bumping into each other. Keiko and I enjoyed the rain shower with ample hot water, but the kids, after a long dip in the cold waterfalls nearby, actually took a hot bath.

A hot bath in a rural village in Indonesia? Not something you hear often.

Rinjani Lodge: Wifi & Power

If you’re a gadget-heavy family like ours, then you’ll also appreciate the ample charging opportunities. There are plenty of power sockets, both for Indonesian plugs (like Europe’s) and Malaysian plugs (like the UK’s).

The Rinjani Lodge has internet, but like most of Lombok, it is limited. Remember: you’re still in a small mountain village, essentially. At the time we stayed, wifi was available in the lobby and restaurant area only but is open to guests. The passwords change daily, so talk to the front desk if you need to connect.

Rinjani Lodge: The Climate & View

The Rinjani Lodge is essentially in clouds for part of each day. If you’ve been in Senggigi, Kuta or the Gilis before you arrive, then you’ll appreciate the Rinjani Lodge’s cooler climate. We were still in shorts and sandals every day, but the temperature fluctuates depending on the cloud cover. This can make magical shapes in the valley as mist and cloud rise and fall.

Check with the front desk about rain during the wet season. The storms can be predictable and short, so sometimes it’s best to leave early or late depending on when the rain comes.

Rinjani Lodge: Pool & Patio

With a view like this, we spent a lot of time on the patio. The patio is quite large and has a daybed large enough for two people to sprawl out on. In fact, that’s exactly what Keiko and I did soon after arrival.

The large patio overlooked an infinity pool and the lush valley below. We could hear the sound of the river below as we drank fresh watermelon juice, sitting on the day bed soaking in the atmosphere. The patio in each room faces east, which means that you can enjoy the sunrise from your bedroom. Want to skip the sunrise and sleep in? Then just close the curtains.

The kids were more interested in the pool, which was only meters away. We could watch them from our room. This could be a huge benefit for parents who tag-team playing with the kids. One parent can work, read or rest while the other plays with the kids, and you’re both still within view and earshot of each other.

Two Infinity Pools

The Rinjani Lodge has two sets of infinity pools. One is in front of the restaurant and open to anyone who eats in. The second set next to the villas a few paces away. Both are stunning and incredibly photogenic. Make sure to be near them around sunset for the best reflections.

Neither pool has a deep end, but it’s deep enough that young ones would need to be accompanied. We also liked that kids (and the sound of kids) are accepted at Rinjani Lodge.

This isn’t a playground of course, but we didn’t feel uncomfortable letting our kids be kids in the pool. We kept our voice down, but we didn’t feel like we had to tiptoe around, which can happen at some resorts.

That said, keep in mind that there are other guests here. Also, parents should know that there is no lifeguard on duty. The stone blocks that edge the pools are hard and rough enough that they don’t get slippery. However, kids should still be careful.

Dining in and Near Rinjani Lodge

When you and the kids get hungry, the Rinjani Lodge is located near many restaurants along the road. Not that you need to go out. Eating at the Rinjani Lodge itself will certainly be the highlight of your stay.

Breakfast included

The day starts with the included breakfast. Guests have a choice between several Indonesian and Western options. After a week of sampling various Nasi Goreng (Indonesian-style fried rice), we chose Western options from the menu.

The kids had mini beef steaks with potatoes, fresh juice, and fruit salad. Keiko and I chose the version with mini fish steaks and fruit with yogurt. Both fish and beef are cooked to your preference: medium rare to well-done.

The portion was just right for adults and growing teen/tween. I should have tried their Indonesian breakfast, though. Our neighboring table sure had a great looking one.

Dinner Menu

Our dinner at Rinjani Lodge was something special. The owner had just created a new menu and we were some of the first people to try it.

Our duck salad with sweet and salty. The chicken bayan curry was flavorful, yet at a low-enough spice level that my chili-averse children gobbled it down. This is rare.

We also ordered a filet of Australian beef (medium rare) and mashed potatoes. I was ready to order some of the mahi-mahi, but the kids wanted a bowl of potato wedges: crunchy on the outside, soft and steamy on the inside.

I washed it all down with a cold bottle of Bintang. Keiko and the kids sampled the juice menu: watermelon with mint, honey and lime with soda water, and pineapple. Those juice cocktails were something you shouldn’t miss at the Rinjani Lodge restaurant.

The final course was a small chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream. Exceptional, but next time I would ask them to hold it until the last minute so the ice cream wouldn’t melt.

Rinjani Lodge: The Location

Exceptional Family Accommodation in Senaru, Lombok: Rinjani Lodge Review Tiu Kelep waterfall lombok

We never ate lunch at Rinjani lodge because we were out exploring every day. Having Lombok’s most beautiful waterfalls so close was a huge plus for us on day one. Rinjani Lodge is located on the road leading up the hill to the park entrance. Had we stayed at the bottom of the road, we’d have a lot more walking (uphill) to do.

Just before the entrance of the park, there are several small stores selling food and snacks. With some help, we managed to get take out rice packages with fried fish to go to the waterfalls.

On day two, Keiko and our girl decided to stay in while the boy and I took a walking tour with a local women’s group, Rinjani Women Adventure. We walked through a traditional Sasak village, as well as through rainforest and rice fields. By the end, we felt like we had seen a real glimpse life in the area where Rinjani Lodge calls home.

Rinjani Lodge: The Service and Hospitality

Exceptional Family Accommodation in Senaru, Lombok: Rinjani Lodge Review family villa staff service

The staff at Rinjani Lodge were the most attentive we’ve experienced in Lombok. The lodge trains and employs local Sasak people from Senaru. We were treated warmly and attentively. All orders in the restaurant were repeated and confirmed, and the front desk went out of their way to answer our questions.

What We Liked

  • Plenty of space in both bedroom and bathroom
  • Plenty or storage
  • The L-shape of the room allows both kids and parents some privacy while still in the same room
  • Ample hot shower (rare in much of Lombok)

What We Loved

  • The patio: what a view! We spent most of our waking ours here
  • The location: right next to restaurants and the waterfalls, with an unmatched view of the sunrise from the porch
  • The infinity pools
  • The food!
  • The breakfast selection and its large portion

Other Things Worth Mentioning

  • Our room was on the second floor, so there are half a dozen stone steps to reach the front door.
  • The back side of the room is near the small, two-lane road that leads to the waterfall and the base camp for those hiking to the peak of Mount Rinjani. While quiet at night, you may hear voices and motorbikes in the mornings as tours and guides head to the trails.
  • There is a Mosque in the neighborhood. Remember that you are in Lombok, “the island of 1000 mosques.”  You may hear the calls to prayer as you would anywhere in Lombok, but it was very faint from our bedroom and completely absent from the front patio.
  • The smooth polished floors can be slippery if wet. If someone spills some water or walks in with a wet swimsuit, then towel it up or tell little ones to walk with caution.
  • Be reminded that the Rinjani Lodge is located in rural Indonesia. Expect to see a few bugs, geckos and other mountain and jungle residents.

Final Thoughts

The Rinjani Lodge is a very special place. We stayed in some great places during our time in Lombok, but the Rinjani Lodge is definitely one of the highlights. Treat yourself (and your family) a night or two at the Rinjani Lodge after the strenuous trek or walk down/up to two beautiful waterfalls.
