Things to Know (Before Browsing San Miguel de Allende Hotels)

Before you book your hotel in San Miguel de Allende, here are a few things about the town you should know.

One Town, Many Names

Some people call it SMA. Other just say San Miguel, despite the dozens of other cities named San Miguel around Latin America. Whatever you call it, the town of San Miguel de Allende is special in many ways. SMA has UNESCO Heritage status and has a thriving art and culinary scene.

Quiet Cosmopolitan for Its Size

Despite being a relatively small town of around 150,000 people, there are approximately 25,000 non-Mexican residents here. It used to be mostly retirees from North America, but that’s changing. Now you’ll find more and more restauranteurs, artists, travelers (like us) and families. And they come from all over. There are French pastry chefs, Sri Lankan chefs, Brazillian architects, and Israeli entrepreneurs. Our kids have had friends from the US, Argentina, Germany, and Ukraine. And of course, loads of warm, friendly and sophisticated local Mexican kids.

Centro, the Parroquia, and the Jardin- San Miguel de Allende Hotels Location

When searching for San Miguel de Allende hotels, most descriptions will use “Centro,” “the Parroquia,” or “the Jardin” as a landmark. In a way, these are all about the same place, but let me explain. “Centro,” simply means the center of town, where a lot of the action is. This is where you’ll find loads of restaurants and shops, as well as historic sights. The Parroquia is the iconic pink stone cathedral that is in the center of Centro, and the Jardin is the beautiful green square that sits in front of the Parroquia.

Parroquia/Jardin VS Centro

Most listings for San Miguel de Allende hotels talk about how close to this area they are to this area, and many are within walking distance. Many of the best San Miguel de Allende hotel listings will say something like “5 minutes on foot to the Parroquia” or “600 meters from Centro. Just keep in mind that the Jardin and Parroquia are at the direct center and take up maybe a city block, while “Centro” refers to the downtown area, which is possibly 5 to 6 city blocks.

SMA is Mexico…and SMA is NOT Mexico

In many ways, San Miguel de Allende is the geographical and cultural hub of the country. So much of SMA is quintessentially Mexico, but in many ways, it differs greatly. Because of the culture, climate and cosmopolitan community, prices in SMA are some of the highest in the country. If you travel in Mexico a lot, then expect some sticker shock. This may be a small town, but a nice dinner may cost similar to what you’d pay in Mexico City. Sure, most things here are cheaper than in New York or London, but it ain’t dirt cheap like in many parts of Mexico. San Miguel de Allende Hotel rates are similar.

Hills, Stairs & Elevators

The city is built in a bowl, with steep hills on the east side of town. A few of the best hotels in San Miguel de Allende are on or near these inclines, so consider them when choosing where to stay in San Miguel de Allende. Also, few places have an elevator, so luggage may have to go up a flight or two of stairs. Most of the best San Miguel de Allende hotels will have staff to help with this of course.

Local Climate / Few AC Units

The city sits at 6,200 ft / 1,900 meters above sea level. That’s almost 300 meters higher than Denver, Colorado, which is known as the “mile-high city.” The sun shines a lot here, but the air is very dry aside from the rainy season. Considering the dry air and altitude, you can expect the temp to drop a bit once the sun goes down.

Being situated in Mexico’s central highlands, there is little need for air conditioning. Even some of the top hotels in San Miguel de Allende don’t have units in the rooms. May is the hottest and driest. If you need a cold room, then avoid May, although San Miguel de Allende hotels on the hills are much cooler than those in town. Some hotels in San Miguel de Allende have fireplaces, as rooms can be cold in January and February. In fact, it may be colder in the room than outside.

Pool Weather is Short

Because this is mostly a family travel blog, I tried to include some of the best hotels in San Miguel de Allende that have pools. That said, you probably won’t spend much time in the water after dark unless it’s heated. Midday is sunny and warm almost all year — even in January — but once the sun goes down the weather cools, and a lot of pools stay fairly cold.

Many San Miguel de Allende Hotels Allow Pets

Yes, you have to get approval first, but many San Miguel de Allende hotels allow pets. This is great news for those who love to travel with furry family members. That said, for those of you with allergies (like me), it’s something to consider.

Cobblestone Streets & Slow Traffic

One of the most charming aspects of San Miguel de Allende are the old-world-style cobblestone streets. They are beautiful, but they are also bumpy and frequently uneven. You can trip and fall easily, so be careful, and wear appropriate footwear. The cobblestones and speedbumps also keep traffic slow, and there is more of it nowadays, so consider that when hailing a cab. Taxis ride quite slow, so it’s often a better option to simply walk. At least that’s what we like to do. Unless it’s up a steep hill or long distance, we tend to walk or take a bus.

Old Infrastructure (in San Miguel de Allende Hotels & Everywhere Else)

Remember that San Miguel de Allende hotels share the same infrastructure as the rest of the city. The old town is beautiful but has grown quickly and suddenly, while still using the same sewage system. Sometimes, in some places (not all) occasional smells can creep up through the pipes in the bathrooms. It’s not strong, but it happens, even in the best San Miguel de Allende hotels downtown. Like in Penang and many other places we love, it’s just something you may deal with for a minute one day.

Growth: More & More San Miguel de Allende Hotels

Like Bali, Tulum, and places like Hoi An Vietnam, this town is booming. More and more hotels and homes are being built. Sometimes these are being built (or rebuilt) next to a hotel. It happens. Many hotels in San Miguel de Allende are new, and more and more are being built all the time. Construction usually starts late morning and ends in the late afternoon. Never at night.

Downtown San Miguel de Allende is Hopping

Some of the best hotels in San Miguel de Allende are in Centro, near the Jardin, which is a tree-lined plaza at the center of downtown. This is where the famous Parroquia pink stone cathedral is. Here you’ll find mariachi bands, rooftop bars an restaurants and loads of people. It can get loud here — especially on weekends. Keep this in mind when choosing your hotel in San Miguel de Allende. If you do choose to stay in Centro (we love it there), consider rooms that face a courtyard or away from the street.

Late Breakfasts

Some of the best hotels in San Miguel de Allende have breakfast included, but they often start serving at 9 am. Not everywhere, but in many places. It’s not just in your San Miguel de Allende hotel. Some restaurants don’t open until 9 am as well. If you plan to have early mornings, keep this in mind.

Casa 1810 Hotel Boutique

Casa 1810 Hotel Boutique - best hotels in san miguel de allende hotels

One of the most beautiful hotels in San Miguel de Allende, Casa 1810 is an aesthetic marvel. The architecture and design touches are a mix of modern and ancient in the most stunning ways. Service is what you’d expect of a luxury hotel in San Miguel de Allende: attentive and intuitive, without being obtrusive. Casa 1810 is also in the middle of town, with one of the best restaurants and rooftop spaces in the city. Dinner or a drink with this view of the Parroquia is imminently memorable.

Casa Cordelli

Casa Cordelli - best san miguel de allende hotels

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, Casa Cordelli is one of the best hotels in San Miguel de Allende for families. But it’s also great for couples who want space and quiet. The villas are large, stylish and closed off from the chaos of Centro. Beautiful and private terraces and kitchenettes. The heated pool and jacuzzi here have one of my favorite views in the city. Then there’s the family who runs Casa Cordelli. Wonderful long-term expats, they’ve been in San Miguel since childhood and are completely invested in the local community. Attentive but not intrusive, helpful but not cloying, they’ve raised their kids here and know all the spots to see, eat and drink.

Up the Hill

Casa Cordelli is removed from Centro, but minutes from the main mirador (lookout point) and an easy 15-minute walk downhill to the Jardin. Or take one of several scenic paths into Benito Juarez Park. If you don’t want to walk back uphill, a taxi costs 50 pesos (approx USD $2.50). Buses #8 and #9 also pass by and cost 7 pesos per person. If looking for exercise, there’s a gym less than 5 minutes away that costs 50 pesos a day. We used to live a block from here and I loved the area and being able to walk to the mirador. Easily one of the best hotels in San Miguel de Allende.

  • Wifi: Yes
  • Pool: Yes (large and heated)
  • Location: Top of the hill. 3 minutes from the Mirador, 15 minutes from Centro.
  • Room Details: Kids under 3 can use a cot or existing bed for free. 4-year-olds cost USD $45/night in existing beds. Kids 5-17 cost USD $45/night for existing bedding or an extra bed. 18 and older also cost USD $45/night for an extra bed. Max # of beds depends on the villa chosen.

Hotel Real De Minas

Hotel Real De Minas - hotels in san miguel

This hotel in San Miguel de Allende is great for families with kids who need a little more space. Real de Minas is a San Miguel hotel near the southern edge of town. Still an easy walk to the park and Centro, but on a larger property than you’ll find downtown. Some of the facilities are showing some wear and tear, but space is a plus. There’s a game room, a large pool and some grassy courtyards for play. Real de Minas also has facilities to host conferences. In fact, both the SMA Writer’s Conference and 2018’s Family Adventure Summit were both held here. There’s also plenty of private parking, which is great for road trippers.

The breakfast buffet is generous, but at the time of writing, there were no a la carte options. That said, the cafes at Mercado Sano and other great restaurants are a short walk away.

  • Wifi: Yes, but often poor. Depends on room location.
  • Pool: Yes
  • Location: 10 minutes from the park, 15 minutes to the Parroquia
  • Room Details: Kids under 11 use existing bedding for free. Kids from 12-17 can use an existing bed or extra bed for MX $250.

Mision San Miguel de Allende

Mision San Miguel de Allende

Like Real de Minas mentioned above, this San Miguel de Allende hotel sacrifices proximity to Centro for more space. The pool is large as are the grounds. Expect a large courtyard and a mini-golf course. The facilities are ready for refurbishing, but clean and well maintained.

You’re at the top of the hill here, with a 20-minute walk to either the Jardin or Benito Juarez park – both downhill. There’s a bus station right outside the hotel so it’s easy to come and go. In the other direction are banks, a supermarket and a movie theater. The in-house restaurant is nothing special. Instead, try the city’s many excellent food options. Tacos, Thai food, and an excellent Sri Lankan restaurant are all basically across the street. Laundromat too.

  • Wifi: Yes, but poor
  • Pool: Yes, and large
  • Location: 20-minutes on foot downtown, but easy access via bus or taxi
  • Room Details: Two kids stay free when sleeping in existing beds.

Suites Santo Domingo

Suites Santo Domingo - San miguel de allende hotel

Most of the suites here are less San Miguel hotel and more like small quirky apartments. The kitchenettes have a small stove, as well as items like a mini-fridge, microwave, toaster, and blender. Not always all of the above, so check if there’s a particular item you want. There is a cleaning service, and your dishes can even be washed for a small fee. Bedrooms are clean, bright, spacious and colorful. The main concern here is that the property is on a hill. This makes walking to town easy, but returning a challenge for those with mobility issues. A very short taxi ride is one solution. A great San Miguel de Allende hotel for those who don’t mind the incline.

  • Wifi: Yes, but spotty
  • Pool: No
  • Location: Uphill, but minutes from the Jardin
  • Room Details: Kids under 2 stay for free in cots or cribs. Kids under 12 cost MX $200/night for extra beds. Additional kids cost an extra MX $200.

A great choice for those who want a San Miguel de Allende B&B experience. Rooms at Casa de la Noche are rustic and colorful. The staff warm and attentive. Most rooms are bright with plenty of windows. The rooftop and courtyard are nice places to chill. Breakfasts are generous. In one of my favorite areas north of the Jardin, close to the library and loads of great shops and restaurants. Some rooms have refrigerators and/or kitchenettes.

  • Wifi: Yes
  • Pool: No
  • Location: 5 minutes from the Library. 10 minutes on foot to the Jardin
  • Room Details: Babies under 1 can use a cot for free. Max # of cots depends on the selected room.

Casa Mia Suites

Casa Mia Suites - San miguel de allende hotel

San Miguel de Allende hotels can feel a bit snug, but the suites at Casa Mia are more like apartments than an SMA hotel room. Rooms encircle a lovely courtyard, which is a lovely place to read or enjoy a coffee or cocktail. Each room is decorated with Mexican folk art. Kitchenettes come equipped to cook and serve a proper meal. However, downtown San Miguel de Allende and its countless great restaurants are minutes down the hill. Speaking of hills, Casa Mia is only 5 minutes from the Jardin but on an incline.

  • Wifi: Yes, but weak in most areas
  • Pool: No
  • Location: Minutes from downtown
  • Room Details: Multiple 2 and 3-bed options, but no extra beds available.

Casa de las Conservas - hotels in san miguel de allende

This family-run San Miguel B&B is on the north end of town, close enough to Centro but removed from downtown noise. Breakfast (included) comes with homemade bread and jams. There’s a nice public area, but the Jacuzzis here are occasionally cold. Rooms are bright and homey. Staff is friendly but not fluent in English. The hotel has only 4 parking spaces, so ask ahead if you need one. Pets are allowed upon request (charges may apply).

  • Wifi: Yes, but poor

Its central location means some noise on the weekends.
