I’m standing in a large atrium surrounded by ferns and cacti. My eye follows the wooden columns up three floors to where sunlight streams in from the roof. In the distance, I can hear children’s laughter and splashing. Someone hands me a chilled glass of cava as I approach the check-in counter. Minutes later, a bellhop scoops up our bags and whisks us away to our room.

We’ve arrived at the Seaside Los Jameos Playa. This is going to be fun.

Located on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Island archipelago, the Seaside Los Jameos Playa is a four-star hotel and resort where many of Europe’s winter refugees come to escape the cold. Lanzarote has the climate and leisure activities to make it an ideal vacation spot any time of year. Moreover, this Spanish territory’s southern location off the Moroccan Coast means that it is one of the warmest places in the European Union during the winter months.

The Room

There are 67 family rooms in the hotel — ours faced the beach, with a furnished deck facing south where we could take in both the sunrise and sunset. Our family room had a queen-sized bed flanked by two singles for our kids. Plenty of plush towels were available for all four of us and they seemed to magically replenish or organize themselves whenever we were out of the room (housekeeping comes twice a day for VIP-level guests). The shower is a big thing for us in hotels — we love strong water pressure and near-instantaneous hot water. Our room at Seaside did not disappoint.

The room also had a large closet, several dressers, and cabinets — plenty of room to put all of your things away. I used the desk to work, and the table next to the balcony had six (!) electric outlets. The TV had a massive channel menu, but we never turned it on.

There also was a refrigerator and a tea kettle with tea bags, coffee, and bottles of water. There was no ceiling light, but several lamps. This made the room dim and subdued at night, but it was plenty for us to organize our bags, read, and check emails. Speaking of which, WIFI was stable and reliable throughout the hotel, which is a rare find in Lanzarote. This was super helpful for me since I needed to catch up on some work.

The Location

The room was bright and open enough for our family of four to move around freely, but we did very little in the room but sleep. There was simply too much to do in Lanzarote, and around the hotel itself. Located less than 10 minutes from the airport, Seaside Los Jameos Playa is in a prime location (and for the record, we were pleasantly surprised to hear no airplane noise). It’s extremely close to a golf course and the zoo/amusement park Rancho Texas, if those are your thing.

For us, we simply liked having a semi-private entrance to the beach and nearby town — just use your room key to walk straight from the resort property onto a strip of shops and bars, with the waves just across the road. The beach directly in front of the hotel is a rocky coast of solidified lava. We enjoyed exploring the miniature sea life that collects in the small tidal pools here — tiny translucent shrimp rose to the surface to tickle our fingers.

A hundred meters to the west, the beach turns to sand. All along the sidewalk here, restaurants, cafes, and English pubs abound. We also located a clinic (with English- & German-speaking staff) , a pharmacy, and a supermarket. Walk back into Seaside Los Jameos Playa and there are faucets and nice towels to wash and dry your feet.

The Property

There was plenty to keep us occupied at the hotel, as well. We played mini-golf and outdoor chess. We walked around the massive grounds and checked out the small museum of traditional Canarian tools and dress. Then, we caught up on laundry while playing billiards (kids vs. adults). The hotel offers laundry services, of course, but they also offer use of a washer and a dryer free of charge.

There are two swimming pools specifically for children, and a kids’ center with babysitting and an activity program that can keep younger children entertained for days with crafts, games, and a mini-disco.

The Performances

My teen and tween liked the evening performances. Every night after dinner there was a different show in one of the first-floor lounges. Our kids enjoyed a guitar performance one night, but their favorite was a magic show. In fact, our girl ended up being part of the show itself! We knew that the guests at Seaside Los Jameos Playa were from all over Europe, but this really hit home at this show, as the magician spoke in four languages as he performed: English, Spanish, French, and German.

The Food

The real star of our stay, however, was the food. Seaside Los Jameos Playa has a reputation for an ample, high-quality buffet, and now I know why. As part of the all-inclusive package, meals at the hotel are presented across indoor and outdoor stations. Inside, there are separate stations for cheese, charcuterie, soups, salads, choices of bread, freshly-cut fruit, desserts, and more.

Outside you’ll find stations for pasta and roasted meats, along with two separate grills: one cooking up steaks and other cuts of meat, while the other served fish. I especially liked that each of these stations served different items each night we were there. For example, on the first evening, the fish grill served cod, hake, and salmon, while the following night it was generous portions of sole, redfish, and tuna steaks. The beef grill did something similar.

International nights

In addition to these nightly items, each dinner also followed a certain national theme. For example, on our first evening, the theme was Mexico, so bean burritos and salmon tacos were on the menu. The following night was Germany/Austria, so the station served saurkraut, sausages, schnitzels, and similar foods.

Remember: this is all in addition to everything mentioned above! You could eat here for a week and never have the same thing twice. This is especially true if you also consider the multitude of salads and other options. For example, the kids devoured an avocado and walnut salad, while I dug into the various sardines, anchovies, and pickled herring on offer.

Breakfast

Breakfast at Seaside was no different. Pancakes, crepes, sausages, omelets, and eggs were plentiful and freshly made, and all the ingredients of a typical English breakfast — beans, bacon, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, etc. — were on prominent display. The bread table had everything from whole-grain loaves to thick, warm pretzels. For us, however, we appreciated that the fruit, salad, cheese, and deli meat stations were available in the morning, as well, and we ate our weight in them.

There were always half a dozen juices available, and for the adults, a table of freshly-poured cava bubbled invitingly. Your coffee arrives in your own personal container, and the tea table had a myriad of bags, leaves, and different sized pots. How about hot chocolate for breakfast? If you like cereal or muesli, they had you covered as well, along with a wide variety or yogurts, seeds, nuts, figs and other dried fruits.

Can you tell we enjoyed the food?

The Leisure Activities

Most guests walked straight from the dining area to a poolside lounge chair to read or nap, but for us, there was an island to explore. In the front lobby, a concierge was available to help you book activities across Lanzarote. For many guests, however, a visit to Seaside Los Jameos Playa is all about taking a break and stepping away from activity.

In fact, I once struck up a conversation with one another guest while we stood at the steak grill one evening. He asked me what we were doing the following day, and I explained our plan to visit Jameos de Agua and Mirador de Rio. When he seemed surprised to know these places existed. Then I asked him his plans. “Oh, just stay here and relax,” he said with a satisfied smile. Indeed. Seaside Los Jameos Playa is that kind of place.

Lanzarote offers so much for curious, adventurous travelers, but Seaside Los Jameos Playa offers the tempting promise of unimpeded leisure. For some, that may take the form of a massage or an afternoon in the hotel spa. Others may prefer a dip in the pool or a match of tennis on one of the hotel’s two courts. For the guest I met at the grill, it meant some good meals, a novel, and a few well-deserved naps by the pool.

Seaside Los Jameos Playa with Kids: Our Verdict

If you want a comfortable, stress-free holiday in Lanzarote, then this is the place to be. The pools and grounds are beautiful, the service is exceptional, the food is delicious and plentiful, and there are more fun family activities nearby than even an ambitious family could fit into a week. Not that you’ll want to venture out every day. Places like Seaside Los Jameos Playa are ideal for people who want to lay back and relax, and that’s exactly what we did.

Comments

  1. Maybe because you visited as a VIP you had preferential treatment.
Yes, I agree that it has a lovely large lobby and beautiful staircase, but as for the gardens/lounging area they are very small for the amount of guests as finding sinners can be quite a chore unless you go down early and put a towel down.
The food is also very good, but being on an all inclusive holiday I do not expect to be bothered while eating my food to have my card swiped everytime I order a drink in the restaurant.
It would also be good to get something other than a crepe, piece of cake or a clingfilm wrapped sandwich if you miss lunch because you have been out for the day. Waiter service would also be welcome in places other than the restaurant. After all, we are on our holidays.

    • Thanks for your comment! We certainly enjoyed our time here. We visited in January, which is not peak season, as there was room around the pools. Then again, we didn’t spend much time at the pool as we were too busy exploring the island! The card swiping didn’t bother us. As for wait staff away from the dining area, that’s a good idea.
