Things to do in Leon Spain – hotels in Leon and what to do in Leon with kids. Our time in Leon was short but fantastic. What began as an overnight stopover on our Spanish road trip turned into a great time eating tapas, swimming frigid streams and exploring beneath the earth’s crust.

Things to Do in Leon Spain With Kids…Or Without

The city of Leon is located in the northwest portion of Spain’s interior. Anyone doing a road trip in Spain should consider a stop. There are lots of fun things to do in Leon Spain for any type of traveler. There is great food, cool caves, amazing architecture and a great river for a dip.

After leaving Salamanca, we soon learned that Spain is full of geographical and geological surprises. As I mentioned before, much of the road between Toledo and Salamanca looked like the American prairie. However, time and time again on this trip we learned how quickly the Spanish landscape could change.

Before we checked into our Airbnb, we shot through the city of Leon to visit the nearby Valporquero cave on the other side. Here the scenery quickly shifted from haystacks and amber waves of grain to craggy gray mountains and clear, icy water. The change was so sudden it took us by surprise.

These caves are less than 50 kilometers from downtown Leon. I enjoy visiting subterranean spaces, and this is one the largest I’ve visited by far. Expect thousands of stalactites and stalagmites in each cavernous expanse, some as thick as trees.

Leon Spain is about 3 hours by train from Madrid & home to churches, cathedrals, architecture and art. However, we found more things to do in Leon Spain than just historic buildings. We explored a beautiful cave with a concert hall inside, a sparkling river to swim in and some amazing tapas. We took the guided tour, which was in Spanish only, but you didn’t really need to understand the language to be in awe of the place. More than once I was reminded of the scene in the movie version of The Hobbit, where the wizard Gandalf exclaims “You. Shall. Not. PASS!”

There are hundreds of steps in this route, and while it’s not a hard walk, you should know that this tour isn’t wheelchair- or baby stroller-friendly. That said, kids as young as five could walk it, and younger ones could be carried. Keep in mind that it’s wet and cool down there (approx 7ºC/45ºF) year round, so watch your step and bring a jacket, even in the heat of summer.

If you like sneaking a peek beneath the earth’s surface, then this is one of the best things to do in Leon Spain.

One of the best things to do in Leon is trying out the tapas scene. The city of Leon has an excellent dining culture, and unlike some Spanish cities, the tapas on offer were well marked on the outside of many establishments. In this part of Spain, one tapa is included with each drink order. The idea behind this is to order a beer or soda here and there, snacking on a tapa. Then you on to the next place.

Tapas Rules

That said, here are two stipulations I’d like to mention. Firstly, make sure that the restaurant you decide on is an actual tapas place and not a regular restaurant. We sat down at one place and ordered drinks. Then they handed us a menu and we realized that it specialized in steaks and seafood. Whoops.

I should also say that your drink order must fit certain requirements to receive free tapas. Plain water, even when bottled, often doesn’t count. It needs to be alcohol (beer, wine, etc) or a bubbly drink in one way or the other. The kids ordered Fanta, and Keiko had to order water with gas, which she likes, but not a new bottle every time we ordered another tapa. We weren’t crazy about the kids drinking that many soft drinks either, but we made an exception for this evening.

What we did was to leave our car at the parking lot near Plaza Mayor, and walked around the town. There are many places to choose from especially near the Plaza San Martín.

One of our favorite things to do in Spain is finding great wild swimming spots, and in Leon, it’s no different.

The water at Rio Torio is clear and beautiful. It’s also really, really cold, so keep that in mind. We chose a spot along the road near the caves, in front of Hotel Rural Chousa Verde, and would happily recommend it to you.

For us, 30 minutes was enough. It was freezing, but we saw lots of people — including kids, adults, and dogs — enjoying a dip. Just take a deep breath before you jump in! This was one of our favorite things to do in Leon Spain.

There are lots of good hotels in Leon, but during our most recent visit, we chose an Airbnb. Either way, you’ll find good places to stay in Leon.

This Airbnb spot is an easy recommend to any and all. It’s not downtown, but the walk there isn’t bad and the price is right.  If you’re driving like we were, it’s even better since parking was often available right next to the front door. Javier, the owner, was really nice, and the place was very well-equipped.
