There are many amusement parks in Spain, and we’re just visiting our first in the country. Terra Mítica in Spain’s southeastern Alicante province has a lot of fun shows and rides for visiting families.

Terra Mítica is not a perfect amusement park, but it’s usually rated one of the best amusement parks in Spain and we would recommend a visit if you’re in Benidorm or elsewhere in Alicante.

Below are a few pics and tips we put together after our visit.

Looking at Amusement parks in Spain? Well with Terra Mítica, you get the roller coasters and shows, and the beach isn’t too far away. We went on Halloween, and there were decorations everywhere. Best of all, there were very few people because it was off season. This meant that the lines were super short so we could ride a lot without waiting.

The kids love the Heroes of Olympus book series, which use Greek and Roman mythologies as a backdrop. Therefore, they especially liked the place’s mythological vibe (the name Terra Mítica means “Mythical Land” in Spanish). The park’s main areas are Egypt, Greece, and Rome, and the architecture reflects that. The rides share similar themes as well. One of the roller coasters is called the Titánide (after the Greek titans), and the log ride is (of course) the “Falls of the Nile.”

Our Favorite Ride

One of our favorite rides was the Maze of the Minotaur. Think laser tag in the labyrinth. Each car has laser guns and as you ride through the darkness there are harpies, gorgons, and nasties from Greek mythology that need to be zapped. Your points are revealed in small monitors on the car itself.  If you’ve ever ridden the Toy Story ride at Disney World, then you know what I’m talking about.

Built on a hill overlooking the ocean, you get a great view the beaches of Benidorm in the distance. These are best viewed from the swing ride (unfortunately) known as the Icarus. You’ve seen this kind of swing ride before, and the view from it is lovely. It might be nice from the ride known as the Tornado, as well, but I wouldn’t know. It’s the one ride that I refused to go on. Why? Well, it’s just like the swings of the Icarus, but it spins faster and it reaches 80 meters in the air.

It’s the 80 meters in the air part that I didn’t like. Keiko and our son rode it, and the boy gave me a hard time for chickening out, but I’m ok with that. I’m not a total wimp with heights. I’ve jumped off cliffs and waterfalls, and I rode every other ride in the park, including the dreaded Titánes roller coaster 3x in a row. But heights like that get to me — or rather lingering at heights like that get to me. I’ve ridden the Takabisha at Fuji-Q Highland in Japan, the roller coaster with the steepest drop in the world, but swinging around by a few chains at 80 meters? No, thank you.

Amusement Park Shows

There are also a number of shows happening throughout the day through the park.

The park has changed hands a few times since it opened in 2001, and now it is split up into two parks: Iberia Park and Terra Mítica. Iberia Park has water rides and more kiddy carnival stuff like bumper cars, but there is still plenty to see and do with little kids at Terra Mítica, including shows based on Cleopatra and Emperor Nero.

Tips for Amusement Parks in Spain

Here are a few quick tips for getting the most out of Terra Mítica and other amusement parks in Spain.

Go in the off-season (if possible)

Seriously. There were times where we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Wait times were minimal, and we were able to ride a lot more than we would have any other time of year.

Bring your own food (when possible)

Most water parks and amusement parks in Spain say that outside food is not allowed. Many travel agents will say the same. However, these rules are rarely enforced in most amusement parks in Spain. They don’t look through your bags with any determination (if they look through at all) and staff don’t usually protest if they see you eating al la carte. That was our experience, and I’ve heard & read of many similar experiences from Terra Mítica and other amusement parks in Spain.

Make sure your kids are tall enough

To ride some rides at Terra Mítica, you must be 140 cm  (4’7″) tall. Other rides — like the Tornado mentioned above — you must be at least 120 cm (3’11”). From our experience, they do enforce this. Unlike in some places in Southeast Asia, where height requirements are sometimes met with a shrug, at Terra Mítica, they will stop kids if they’re too short. I saw one disappointed girl twice try to beat the rule only to be told she’d have to wait while her older sister got to ride something.

Bring sunscreen — even in the off-season

This part of the Costa Blanca is sunny year-round, so be prepared. We were there at the end of October and I got a mild sunburn on my neck.
