Things to do in Lanzarote: Teguise with Kids

One of the most surprisingly fun things to do in Lanzarote was this Canary Island town. Teguise is a great place to stop for lunch and wander around. Here’s a quick rundown of a few fun things to do in Teguise with kids in tow.

Check out Downtown

Teguise isn’t a big place. You can cover the entire downtown area in less than an hour. That also includes a stop at the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, a church that has stood in Teguise since the 16th century. I also noticed a nice playground and a few cool boutiques, one specifically for bespoke children’s clothes.

Hit the Sunday Market

Every Sunday, the town square becomes a large open-air market. Here you’ll find souvenirs, Canary Island crafts, homemade bread, and other snacks. Locals in traditional clothing get together and dance for the cameras, as well.

Find Lunch

Most of our favorite things to do in Lanzarote are in the northern and southern corners of the island. Surfing lessons were in the north, and scuba diving lessons were in the south. Therefore, we were passing right through Teguise around lunchtime.

Our sandwiches from La Palmera were fantastic, and we had the menu del dia at El Chiriguito before heading to the airport. We could choose two items from an extensive list of pre-made dishes, along with bread and a drink.
I had a beef stew and vinegared octopus. The kids had sandwiches. We even bought a second round of sandwiches for the plane so that dinner was sorted before the airport.

Visit the Museo de la Pirateria

We really enjoyed this pirate museum! Out of all the things to do in Lanzarote with kids, this was a surprise hit since we just stumbled across it. Look for a small castle perched on a hilltop overlooking Teguise. It’s called Castillo de Santa Bárbara, (Google Maps didn’t say it was a museum). If passing through town, drop in here for an hour or so.

Once raided by actual pirates, the castle now documents the history of piracy in the Canary Islands. Apparently, this area was once swarming with blood-thirsty bandits. When you think about Lanzarote’s strategic location in the Atlantic off the North African coast, it makes sense.

Views, Videos, and Visuals

The museum did a great job of engaging our kids. There isn’t much here in terms of relics or artifacts. Instead, they make up for it with multimedia displays and lots of large comic-like illustrations. For example, in one room a wide-screen TV shows clips of pirates from the movies over the decades. Spread throughout the building are large colorful pirate illustrations. Many of them depict the area’s most famous pirates, along with their stories in English, German and Spanish.

Beware: some of these stories are not pretty (notice the pirate holding a baby overboard in the image below).

From the roof, you can see the ocean on two sides. Quite a strategic location, right? You can stand above the actual drawbridge and look out into the sea. This isn’t a huge castle, but it’s much more interesting since it’s an actual castle where pirates once raided. The view from the battlements is worth the price of admission alone.

If you’re on the island for a few days or more, it’s worth dropping by Teguise with kids.
