Hikes, bees, and tea: just three of the things to do in the Cameron Highlands. Malaysia is an amazing place to travel (and to live) with kids, but when you want to escape the country’s heat and humidity, there’s only one place on the peninsula to go: the Cameron Highlands.

Things to do in the Cameron Highlands

The altitude and cooler temperatures give the Cameron Highlands a climate and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else on the Malaysian peninsula. Moreover, there are enough fun things to do in the Cameron Highlands with kids to keep a family busy for at least a few days. I’ve listed them up a few of our recommendations below.

Tea Plantations

Out of all the things to do in the Cameron Highlands, this is what I would recommend first. Just driving through the hillsides of tea fields is a satisfying experience, but it wouldn’t be complete without actually visiting one of the plantations. There are a number of tours you can join.

When we visited, we watched the tea being harvested and processed, and then sat on a deck eating fresh scones with clotted cream. The most well-known plantation and factory tours are with the Boh Tea Plantation, but there are others.

Hothouses & Greenhouses

Some of the most educational things to do in the Cameron Highlands deal with agriculture. The cooler temperatures make the Cameron Highlands an ideal place to grow many kinds of produce. Driving around you’ll see lots of greenhouses and farms. Strawberries are one of the area’s main exports, but you’ll also find tomatoes, passion fruit, and other produce.

Kids love picking their own strawberries, and lots of places provide that service in the Cameron Highlands. You’ll see signs along the road.

Lavender is also grown in the Cameron Highlands. At Cameron Lavender, you can pick flowers or just soak in their beauty. Looking for something a bit…sharper? Check out the Cactus Valley.

Bees & Butterflies

Pollinating the Cameron Highlands’ vast flora are millions of bees. These can be viewed up close at a number of apiaries in the area (an apiary is like a bee farm). The EeEngfu Apiary isn’t particularly magnificent but is a fun spot to stop and check out the hives. It’s free admission — probably because they want you inside buying honey and related products.

There is also a Butterfly Garden in the Cameron Highlands. While not as impressive as what you’ll see at Entopia on the island of Penang, the kids may enjoy the excursion, and there are other bugs and reptiles there.

Hikes & lookout points

Hiking and jungle trekking are also popular things to do in the Cameron Highlands with kids. There are a number of trails and guides available, and some guides offer tours to the villages of the peninsula’s original inhabitants. You’ll see signs for tours and tour agencies all over town.

One walk that’s easy to do without a guide (if you have a car) is the Mossy Forest. This is not a trail as much as a footpath with a number or wooden steps and walkways. It’s damp up there — sometimes you feel like you’re in the clouds — and this can make the walkway slippery, so beware.
