Read any Villas Carrizalillo review and the same things keep popping up: a secluded cove, blue water, exquisite meals, and a magical sunset every night. I’ve now been here twice, and I know why.

Villas Carrizalillo Review

Back in 2012, we made our first trip to see my sister in Puerto Escondido on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. My sis and my brother-in-law loved this little town so much that they decided to get married there. It was the best wedding I’ve ever been to.

Seriously. Everyone said the same thing.

Part of the reason we loved it was the people, of course. And the town of Puerto Escondido has a lot going for it, as well. The most crucial element of our trip was Villas Carrizalillo, a small boutique hotel perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific.

We love exploring Mexico, and Villas Carrazilillo helped make this one of our favorite places in the country.

The Best Place to Stay in Puerto Escondido

Now fast-forward five years, and we return to Villas Carrizalillo once more. It’s my sister’s fifth wedding anniversary, and we all had such a good time we wanted to try it again. It’s risky returning to the same place and hoping for the same experience, but for us, it paid off. Villas Carrizalillo is an exceptional hotel for families, for couples or for large groups.

Villas Carrizalillo Review: Why We Love Villas Carrizalillo

There’s a lot that makes Villas Carrizalillo special for us, but let’s start with the most practical elements.

Balance of Fancy & Functional

The Villas Carrizalillo is not a luxury resort, but it strikes our favorite balance of comfort and functionality. The floors are smooth, the beds are soft, and everything is clean and tidy. The furniture is sturdy and stylish, but not overly so.

For travelers (and traveling parents) like me, this is the ideal level of comfort. I love to stay in a nice place, but some luxury retreats make me nervous with their white couches and teetering vases. I want to feel like I’m being pampered without worrying that the kids (or I) will break something.

Varied Unit Designs with a Kitchen

Each villa here has a different layout. Some are one bedroom units overlooking the sea. Other have two or even three bedrooms and have living spaces, patios, and swinging hammocks. Villas like the Londres and the Canada (where we stayed) have two bedrooms, where villas like the Colorada have a living room space with a sofabed for little ones.

Most units have a kitchen with pots, pans, fridge, cutlery and a coffeepot. A jug of water keeps everyone hydrated and is replaced when it runs low.

You can easily cook as much and as often as you like here, but don’t eat all your meals in because…

Espadin: Great On-Site Restaurant

Things to Do in Puerto Escondido — Fun Things to Do in Oaxaca, Mexico Espadin restaurant for sunset

The Villas Carrizalillo property hugs a ledge overlooking the cove and the Pacific ocean beyond it. Half of that ledge is occupied by Espadin, a spectacular restaurant serving steaks, sandwiches, seafood and fantastic Mexican food.

The entire seating area overlooks the beach below. The sunsets here will be some of the most memorable you have in your life. Even if you stay elsewhere, you should still enjoy a meal or two at Espadin. It’s great food in a great location, but the price is not that different than other restaurants in the area without such a view.

You don’t have to stay at the villas to eat at Espadin. In fact, at sunset, you’ll see lots of people having a meal or cocktails and enjoying the view. They have occasional live music while we were there, we have seen many people come in just to enjoy the sunset with dinner. Sometimes, they will have a live band playing but if you sit on the deck with ocean view, you are far away enough to enjoy both music and an intimate conversation.

Private Access to Playa Carrizalillo

Villas Carrizalillo Review — Best Place to Stay in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico Playa Carrizalillo stairs

The villas overlook Playa Carrizalillo, a beautiful cove and the best beach in Puerto Escondido for families and other travelers. There just one thing: it takes about one hundred stairs to reach, and the same hundred steps back to the top.

We hung out on Playa Carrizalillo almost every day while we were there. It was especially nice that they have their own private staircase to the sand.

Once we arrived at the beach each day, we’d park ourselves under a palapa (straw hut/snack shack). We’d order a few beers and guacamole, and then rent a paddleboard from the proprietor sitting in the sand nearby. My son took his first surfing lesson here in 2012, and now both he and his sister rode the waves.

Playa Carrizalillo is a mellow beach with a weak undertow. Sheltered on two sides by rock walls, the waves never get too high here. This makes this beach a great place for a first-time surf lesson. And if you want real waves, Playa Zicatela is a 10-minute taxi ride away.

Easy Access to Surfing, Dining & Shopping

Things to Do in Puerto Escondido — Fun Things to Do in Oaxaca, Mexico shopping on el rinconada

Walk five minutes up the road and you’ll reach the Rinconada, a street with restaurants, shops, and a small supermarket. A large supermarket (Super Chedraui) is 15 minutes away, or a quick taxi for about 30 pesos.

Further down the road is the happening Playa Zicatela, a beach loved by surfers the world over. Plenty of food and shopping here, as well.

We also liked the local night market on the Aluquin, which is also a short taxi ride away.

Other Things to Know

Villas Carrizalillo Review — Best Place to Stay in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico Espadin restaurant and pool

If it’s not clear yet in the Villa Carrizalillo review, we really loved our stay here. Here are a few additional things that some people might want to know.

The Pool is Small

You won’t do any laps in this pool, but you have the ocean only 100 steps away, so consider that. We still enjoyed the pool — especially to cool off after walking up the stairs from the beach. You can order food and cocktails to be sent to the pool as well.

Stairs to the Beach

The main feature of this Villas Carrizalillo review is the great access to a nice beach. Keep in mind the stairs involved to access this little spot of paradise. There are over 100 steps.

Cats on the Property

There are a few cats that roam the area near reception. They don’t go in the rooms, but I’ve seen them sitting on chairs in the common areas. If you’re not allergic to cats (like me), then this shouldn’t matter to you.

Our Verdict: Villas Carrizalillo Review

This is a no-brainer. We wrote this Villas Carrizalillo review because we’ve loved staying here twice and plan to again next time we are in Puerto Escondido.

  1. Hi Jason,

Everything looks first rate. Especially that neat little cove where the fam can lay out or enjoy cooling off in the water. This is a biggie for me. If I am staying by the beach, I want to be a few minutes – or moments – from the water. I have been beach side – allegedly – but had to ride the motorbike or get a ride just to taste the water. But I have also lived a block or 2 from the beach and thoroughly enjoy those experiences. Roll out of bed onto the beach. Loving this review.
