Dining Time: The Tapas Menu at La Republicana

Before we move on to the tapas menu, a small primer on Spanish dining practices. Before you decide where to eat in Zaragoza, you might first want to consider when. In case you’re not aware, the Spanish meal schedule is quite different from many places in the world. Many restaurants often don’t open for lunch until 1 pm, and it’s common to eat dinner until 10 pm or even later.

El Tubo in Zaragoza: The Tapas Menu

There are lots of great restaurants in Zaragoza, but for the best tapas menus in Zaragoza, go downtown to the El Tubo district. Here there are plenty of tapas restaurants to choose from.

Unlike cities such as Leon and places further south like Andalucia, tapas don’t come free with a drink order. However, the variety and eating style still make the tapas menu in Zaragoza the best way to sample Spanish cuisine.

Once most people decide where to eat in Zaragoza, they simply walk into a place and order a drink. After sampling a tapa or two, they move on to the next place. It’s that simple. Prices can range from a single euro to ten times that amount, but it’s easy to have a filling meal without breaking the bank.

No matter where you try tapas in Zaragoza, most places are stand-up affairs, so keep this in mind if you’ve been walking all day. Chairs and sit-down tables are usually available of course, but there may only be a few and someone might be sitting there.

We discovered La Republicana via the Zaragoza City Card. Research had shown us that the El Tubo district was where to eat in Zaragoza. Then we remembered that one of the deals and discounts with a number of tapas places.

We started walking through the Tubo district and started getting very hungry. However, there was something about La Republicana and the tapas menu there that told us instantly we had found our dinner spot. For me, it was the odd and eclectic interior, with its walls and shelves filled with vintage images and curios.

For my daughter, the adorable, hand-drawn Zaragoza tapas menu was what sold her on La Republicana. Each tapas specialty was illustrated next to a listing of the ingredients.

For Keiko and our boy, the tapas menu was nice, but it was simply looking at the plates on tables and seeing these drawing in their actual form.

Using the Zaragoza Card

La Republicana had a deal with using the Zaragoza City Card: one free tapa and drink per person. Deals like this are just to get you in the door of course, but it worked on us. Since the entire tapas menu looked great, we decided to just stick to one place. And I’m glad we did.

We chose to get a house selection: a dozen items from the tapas menu, chosen by Le Republicana staff. Our plan was to sample the recommended dozen from the tapas menu first. After they were consumed, we would order our free ones.

That way, we would try a lot of them. If we liked one so much that we wanted a second all to ourselves, or if we wanted to try something that didn’t come with the initial twelve, then that would be our final order.

Huevos Republicanos: Top Picks from the Tapas Menu #1

By the end of the meal, we had tried all but two of their offerings and had re-ordered twice. The boy’s favorites were the Huevos Republicanos: a multicolored deconstruction of breakfast materials — eggs, potatoes, cabbage, onions, and ham — into a sweet and savory new form.

Migas: Top Picks from the Tapas Menu #2

Our daughter’s top pick was Migas, which mixed different spices with similar ingredients — sausage, egg, onions, and potatoes — to create a completely different taste.

Cebolita: Top Picks from the Tapas Menu #3

Keiko enjoyed the Cebolita, which seasoned caramelized onions with ginger and cinnamon. The sweet-and-savory mix was then placed on a puff pastry and topped with a slice of bleu cheese and a cherry.

For me, it was…well, which one? Was it the Cremoso, with its raisins and cream cheese? Or the Bomba croquette, stuffed with tuna, boiled egg, and olives? Perhaps the Cerdito, with its succulent slice of chorizo and blood sausage accented by a padrón pepper?

It’s hard to decide, but the two extras that I ordered were the Albardilla, a crisp pastry of leeks and bleu cheese, and the Piqillo, a small paprika pepper stuffed egg and tuna.

The Bill & The Verdict: Top Zaragoza Tapas Menu

Our meal costs less than 40€ in total. That included 18 items from the tapas menu and a number of drinks: water and Fanta for Keiko and the kids, and several glasses of sangria for me.

The service was typical of Spain in general: not especially attentive, but they were very busy and we never felt ignored. Would we go back? You bet we would. This is definitely one of the best tapas menus in Spain and exactly where to eat in Zaragoza.
